Africa and crypto in 2023

In Africa, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple have been gaining popularity in recent years as a way to transact, do business and store value. It is hard to estimate the exact general numbers of cryptocurrency users across the continent. Still, certain analyses say that for example around 12 million cryptocurrency users are living in East Africa as Kenya and Tanzania.

One of the main reasons for this is the lack of access to traditional banking services for many Africans. According to the World Bank, around one third of the African population has access to a bank account while the increasing use of mobile money has set the stage for the adoption of cryptocurrencies, as many of the same benefits such as low transaction costs and ease of use apply.

Another reason for the growing interest in cryptocurrencies in Africa is the potential for economic empowerment since many people in Africa are unbanked and have limited access to traditional financial services. The lack of financial access, freedom and capital prevent s many Africans from participating fully in the global economy. Cryptocurrencies offer a way for these individuals to store and transfer value, potentially giving them greater economic opportunities.

According to some analysts, despite many benefits with decentralised technology, there are also concerns about using cryptocurrencies in Africa. One of the main concerns is the lack of market-friendly regulation, which can make it difficult for individuals and businesses to know how to comply with laws and regulations. Additionally, there are some older concerns about the potential for fraud and financial crimes via cryptocurrencies.

However, in general the adoption of cryptocurrencies in Africa is still in its early stages and the future of it is uncertain. Cryptocurrencies have the potential to provide economic empowerment and greater financial inclusion for many people on the continent. It is important that governments and other stakeholders work to develop regulations and oversight to ensure the safe and responsible use of cryptocurrencies in Africa.
