How do you decide on the percentage composition of your portfolio?

The bear market doesn’t seem to let up soon. Compounded with rising bills and stagnant salaries, many of us find it hard pressed to invest in many crypto projects. Some of us may just invest in BTC and/or ETH - commonly acknowledged as the blue chips - and hope for our financial situation to turn around.

For those of us with more latitude in our wallets, it seems that we regard BTC and ETH differently from the rest. BTC and ETH are meant for long term HODL-ing purposes. We may also invest in promising altcoins with short term hype driven price fluctuations expected. These altcoins may just moon, so we don’t want to miss out on the action (and profits).

I once asked this sub if they possess BTC and if so, what is the percentage BTC occupies in their portfolio. Many of you were generous to go the extra mile as you not only shared the percentage composition of your BTC, but also revealed the relation it has to the rest of your portfolio. Here are some examples:

30% BTC, 40% ETH, 20% DOT, 10% ALGO

35% BTC, 25-35% KDA and remaining 30% on 6-12 altcoins

35% BTC, 35% ETH, 30% altcoins

35% BTC, 35% ETH, 25% altcoins like ADA & ALGO & MATIC & DOT, 5% altcoins like CKB & BNB

40% BTC, 40% ETH, 20% alts

45% BTC, 45% ETH, 10% altcoins

50% BTC, 50% ETH - not touching altcoins for now

60% BTC, 30% ETH, 10% altcoins

65% BTC, 30% ETH & 5% ADA & LINK

70% BTC, 25% ETH & 5% alts

70% BTC, 15% ETH & 15% alts

My question is: once you decide on the altcoins you wish to invest in, what is the thought process you employ to determine its percentage composition? From the various examples above, it seems that having an equal amount of BTC and ETH is the preferred route, with a lower overall percentage allocated for altcoins. Does this apply in your case?
