The future of social media.
I think we're on the cusp of a social media revolution.
Facebook, and the current tech giants could lead the way in pulling the fairness of crypto into their platforms, but unless it spells profits...they WON'T!
Social media has proven to be more important than just one companies app, it has now connected the world, and there's no going back.
I've been into web development over the pandemic, and as I started to get into crypto, I tried playing around with different companies token/ledger testnet SDK's. I was trying to get an idea of what's possible, and also to see if some of these companies were scams.
I'm NO EXPERT, but the sense I got is that we're still VERY early into crypto development. Right now, everybody is just trying to get some sort traction in a noisy industry. They're all still working hard to carve out their position and grow their base. Some companies have a big picture in mind, and some only want to stick with a niche.
Each company still has a startup vibe though, and will take lots of time and resources to pull off a new social media paradigm like I'm thinking about...
The idea is way too big for me to create myself.
It's not all my idea, but it's a De-Centralized Social Media platform where users earn, buy and interact with content there. Imagine if there was a social media platform where the USERS split the revenues! Kind of like a co-op. You can also earn by creating content, and also purchase any content you wish. It still requires user created content, so it still should be monetized, and there might be ads, but it should be free and open for all to see.
I'd love to see Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Discord all rolled into one dApp that is owned by everybody. No one company or government that can call the shots.
Another important aspect to think about here is that all the content should be archived in a de-centralized way to prevent "link rot" or "content drift".
If you don't know what that is, check it out. It's a real problem journalists and historians are facing in the digital age.
The reason I think the idea is too big for me, is that there are still way too many problems to solve. Not just technical problems, but the biggest issues are philosophical ones. The kinds of problems that need serious experts working on it ... transparently.
It's a big can of worms.
BUT...How do we moderate it? And should we? Could we trust AI to do it?
It would seem absurd to moderate a private conversation at a bar between 2 people, so why should we do that in a digital space?
With an unregulated space like I'm suggesting, it would bring with it ways to facilitate the worst of humanity. Crime would inevitably seep in. How should that problem be dealt with? The only answer that should be considered here, is MORE decentralization.
It would need to be democratized somehow where we all govern ourselves. Could that even work? Democracies seem to provide the most freedom, but have also proven to be imperfect, and even violent.
Would it end up splintering into factions? Would it bring us more together as a society? Or drive us further apart? I think it's an idea worth exploring, and not something that should be shelved just because of some bad apples.
That's why this product has to come from the people, or one of the fair crypto development projects out there.
I know the Winklevoss brothers are into crypto and have resources, so I want to put together a pitch for them as a way to take down Zuckerberg once and for all. ;)
We all want the future to be a utopia... don't we?
That's why I'm so excited about this idea. It provides a way of facilitating the logistics of that utopia. Although there are bad people out there, we can't throw the baby out with the bath water. Humans are flawed, but beautiful, and we can't stop trying to reach that ideal future just because we're not perfect.
I really hope to see something like this in my lifetime.
