Good day everybody,
Welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. Today I will be looking at the latest news to emerge surrounding WorldCoin, as it has been revealed the company plans to share its ID System with both governments and private companies. This is likely not the news anybody who has already scanned their eyes as part of the Orb system will want to hear, and raises questions over the data implications of taking part in WorldCoin.
WorldCoin Opens doors to Government and Private Business
The controversial tech firm and cryptocurrency known as WorldCoin (WLD), which was co-founded by Sam Altman has revealed they will be enabling governments and private businesses to make use of their controversial iris-scanning and identity-verification technology. The company, which collects peoples data through the scanning of the iris and gives cryptocurrency tokens in return, has been attracting regulatory scrutiny for its controversial tech.
Europe at Tools For Humanity, the company behind the Worldcoin initiative, have spoken out on this prospect, with the General Manager Ricardo Macieira stating:
"We are on this mission of building the biggest financial and identity community that we can."
He went on to add that the project's pursuit of creating a widespread infrastructure would not only benefit its users, but also accommodate third parties which would be looking to integrate this technology as an ID system. The technology makes use of iris-scanning orbs which are used by individuals to verify their identity. The lure for people to make use of this technology is the offer of free crypto tokens in return for scanning. However, concerns have been raised over the privacy and potential misuse of biometric data by WorldCoin.
At the time of writing, over 2.2 million people have made use of the scanning orbs over their two year trial phase. According to the company website for WorldCoin, the company allows users to choose whether or not their biometric data is stored in encrypted form, or if it is deleted altogether. Macieira went on to express that the intention of the technology behind the iris-scanning orbs would be made open-source, meaning a wider utilization by different organizations. This is in line with the wider aim of WorldCoin to create a community-centric approach to its technology. Macieira stated:
"The idea is that anyone can in the future build their own orb and use it to benefit the community that it's aiming for."
However, this move has sparked debate on multiple front, with the companies engagement with governments and businesses causing concern. Many people within the industry have questioned whether or not the potential misuse of biometric data, along with a concentration of control in a single entity, is a safe use for the technology. This fear is heightened in non-democratic countries.
While there are many potential hurdles facing WorldCoin's expansion, it has still been gaining rapid pace. The company has raised $115 million in funding from notable venture capital investors earlier this year, showing the faith the investors have in the project. At the same time regulators in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are investigating the project in terms of its data collection. On the 2nd of August 2023 Kenya closed its doors to WorldCoin, and plans to launch an investigation into the company.
While there have certainly been plenty of issues, especially around the data collection and the technology in use, the company envisions diverse applications for its ID system. These would include distinguishing humans from artificial intelligence to enabling global democratic processes and have even suggesting a path towards universal basic income. The company will continue its operations in various regions, including Europe, Latin America, Africa, and other receptive parts of the world, according to Macieira. However, for those considering making use of an Orb to scan their iris, the fundamentals around the privacy, data security, and the ethical implications of such technology should always be considered above the "free lunch" of crypto tokens.
Have a great day.
Peace. CryptoGod-1.
