Worldcoin to Launch New Orb

Worldcoin to Launch New Orb

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all well and had an excellent weekend, welcome to CryptoGod-1’s blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the recent news that Worldcoin are planning on launching a new version of their eye-scanning orb, one which will be considered more appealing and friendly to use.

Worldcoin Orb

Alex Blania, CEO and co-founder of Tools for Humanity, the company behind Worldcoin, recently noted that Worldcoin is looking to release a new version of its futuristic-looking Orb device. Blania noted the new Orb will resemble an Apple product, stating:

“The new orb is coming and the next iterations will look quite different.”

The Worldcoin Orb is a device which makes use of iris scanning to assign individuals a “World ID.” The ID grants users access to Worldcoin’s application along with a digital passport. This is considered a verification process which can be used to authenticate individuals’ identities and prevent the creation of multiple accounts.

Having only released the original Orb around 180 days ago, the existing one resembles a prop from a sci-fi movie given its chromatic bowling ball-sized appearance. The new Orb, set for release in the first half of 2024, will feature alternative colours and form factors, aiming for a more approachable and friendly appearance. The overall design will be considerably toned down and will resemble the sleek aesthetics of an Apple product.

Blania, along with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Max Novendstern, co-founded Worldcoin and so far the project has gained approximately $250 million in funding from investors such as a16z, Bain Capital Crypto, and others. Blania also noted how peoples obsession with the Orbs visual appearance means people either “hate it or they love it.”

Currently there is about 3.13 million users who have signed up with Worldcoin and made use of the Iris scanning technology, with about 190,000 new signups in the last week. This is according to the Worldcoin website, and the overall goal of Worldcoin, according to Blania, is:

“The thesis is very simple. We race toward billions of users as fast as we possibly can.”

During the event in which Blania gave his interview, StrictlyVC, there were a “couple dozen” attendees who scanned their irises in exchange for a World ID. There has also been “field testing” for the new Orb according to an employee who was manning a booth at the event.

When the project was in its initial Beta testing mode it received criticism for its perceived focus on developing nations, with the project focused on adoption in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Nairobi, Kenya; Lisbon, Portugal; and Bangalore, India. Since then Worldcoin has increased its global presence by hitting major cities such as Tokyo, Miami, New York City and San Francisco in an effort to expand its presence.

With the announcement of the World I.D. 2.0, an updated version of its current World I.D. features, the company noted that the World ID 2.0 would be integrated with with platforms such as Minecraft, Shopify, Mercado Libre, Reddit, and Telegram. These new features are designed to minimise losses attributed to bots without requiring users to divulge their personal information to the applications they are making use of.
