I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at how a court in Manchester have sentenced seven gang members to a total of 76 years behind bars for kidnapping and torturing a man to extort cryptocurrency.
UK Gang Members Jailed for Kidnapping and Torture
A United Kingdom gang consisting of seven members were convicted of kidnapping and torturing a man to extort cryptocurrency. The Crown Court in Manchester sentenced the men to a combined 76 years on January 30th The gang repeatedly assaulted and coerced the victim into transferring £100,000 ($124,152) worth of cryptocurrency to the gang over a number of months.
The victim was repeatedly targeted after the ordeal began back in January 2023. He was confronted at his home by a man demanding cryptocurrency and in a panic fear for his life he transferred funds to gang member Scott Armstrong. A couple of weeks late David Povey and another accomplice used a knife to force the victim to hand over more funds. While the victim complied, the gang continued to target him as the harassment did not stop.
In October 2023 the gang continued to attack the victim, and this time Gary Edwards lured him to a flat. There he was tied up, beaten, and locked in a cupboard overnight. The victim was unable to pay so the gang got another assailant, Kane Godiff, to threaten his life. Following hours of violence the victim received an acceptable amount and released him. Only a couple of days later the gang once again tortured the man and forced him into a house where they placed a bag over his head and subjected him to further threats and violence.
On the 30th of November, 2023, Edwards approached the victim at a friend's house and abducted him into a van, and transported him to another location. A few days later, the police received an anonymous tip about the victim's welfare on the 2nd of December and officers arrived to find gang member Karl Johnson fleeing the scene. Within the house they discovered the terrified victim, who pleaded for help. The victim had bore burn marks, bruises, and injuries from being beaten with weapons. They also found a gun, ammunition, machetes, knives, a baseball bat, ropes, and cable ties used to restrain him. The victim reportedly pleaded, “Can you take me with you?”
The kidnappers were sentenced as follows:
Jonathan Newns, 24, was jailed for 20 years for attempted robbery, kidnap, false imprisonment, and possession of a firearm.
David Povey, 34, received 20 years for robbery, kidnapping, false imprisonment and attempted robbery.
Luke Johnson, 25, was sentenced to 13 years and six months for attempted robbery, false imprisonment and kidnapping.
Gary Edwards, 47, was jailed for 10 years and two months for attempted robbery,
Kane Godiff, 33, received seven years and five months.
Karl Johnson, 35, was sentenced to three years for assisting robbery.
Scott Armstrong, 39, received two years and four months for transferring criminal property.
