The Other Party
A statement published on the website of 'The Other Party' noted it is starting its commitment to decentralize power and restore it to the public using blockchain technology within the United Kingdom. Their aim is to shake up conventional centralised political systems and shift towards a more direct and transparent democratic process through the use and potential of blockchain technology.
Founder of the Other Party Dom Ryder noted:
“We are embarking on a journey to redefine democracy. Our mission is to remove the centralised power of politicians and return it to the hands of the people. By leveraging blockchain technology, we are ensuring every voice is heard, every vote counts, and every decision is transparent and incorruptible.”
Considered as a neutral entity, neither left nor right-leaning, another of The Other Party’s initiatives include the issuance of “governance passports” to UK voters in the form of NFTs. These would be considered as a digital identity on the blockchain and allow voters to be “immutable, traceable and protected from tampering or undue influence.” This idea has stemmed for verifying eligibility while upholding the anonymity of voters as part of the decision-making process. The approach empowers each passport holder to actively propose, vote on, and directly implement policies within the nation, making a radical change from the established and current political system.
The Other Party went on to note that any elected representatives from the party would be under a legal obligation to adhere to decisions made by their constituents over conforming to a party line. Ryder went on to say:
“This isn’t just about politics; it’s about empowering every individual to actively shape our society. The Other Party is a movement for those who believe in a future where democracy is truly by the people, for the people.”
The Other Party has also gone on to create a Proof of Donation (POD) memorabilia token, which according to their website should be considered a 'digital sticker' and holds no inherent utility or value. The tokens were issued on the Ethereum blockchain and can be obtained through the decentralized exchange Uniswap. There are a total supply of approximately 3.5 trillion of the POD token and it purportedly mirrors the total amount of pound sterling in circulation.
The website went on to clarify that despite any intrinsic value, The Other Party acknowledged the potential collectible nature of the POD token, comparing it to the traditional political memorabilia like stickers, leaflets, or letters, used by a multitude of political parties. They also said it would not “hinder our donors from attempting to transact in their proof of donation token if there is a secondary market and they do become collectible or desirable as memorabilia.”
An interesting take on politics and how blockchain can move us into a more democratic 21st century. It will be very interesting to watch the development of The Other Party over the coming years.
