Whether you are a console gamer or not, the news that Sony is looking to integrate NFTs into their games is of course a welcome sign for the crypto industry, any adoption must been seen as good adoption. Below I will go through exactly what has happened and what Sony could be looking to do with NFTs.
Sony Patent Filing
It was noted by the website Segment Next that Sony had applied for a patent towards bringing the next level of technology to its video games and consoles. The framework has been laid out as they published a patent titled ‘NFT Framework For Transferring And Using Digital Assets Between Game Platforms’ which looks at the potential of NFTs being brought into the platform, with users possibly even capable of trading certain NFTs between games and with other players.
Interesting news, giving the gaming industry has generally been adamant on their disdain of NFTs in gaming, with many sceptical and only having larger reservations regarding NFTs having seen the cryptocurrency market collapse in 2022. Of course as an outsider it is always a different aspect to accept and consider the benefits, and possible negatives, it could actually bringing to the gaming realm.
Sony have not abandoned the idea of bringing blockchain-based technology into their platform, and within the patent they have stated:
"Current systems are technologically inadequate for the owner to use the asset across different games and platforms. Accordingly, as further recognised herein, the functionality of the game may be enhanced by enabling gamers and/or spectators to exclusively use the asset and possibly transfer its rights to others via NFT."
While it is a very open ended statement, it is also exciting for any avid gamers out there. The technology is still far from at the levels required within the gaming industry to suddenly implement NFTs overnight, but the system suggested by Sony would possibly allow users to reap specific benefits through NFTs.
It could be a specific NFT being unlocked for the first player, or number of players, who defeat a specific boss in a game after its launch. This NFT could grant a unique bonus or reward of some other sort. Some drawbacks have been noted with the fact the gaming press and influencers receive a copy of the games prior to general release, but these are just the ideas being teased out.
Also within the patent it states how the potential of ‘a certain level, score, and/or points accumulation in a particular video game‘ could allow the player to mint a NFT. Similar to trophies as achievements, it seems to be a NFT as a reward for completing the game when can then be sold or traded with other players. A nifty feature which has been mooted is that the NFT could allow another player to advance their own gameplay.
"The NFT may then be transferred to someone else, who may then resume the game where the transferor left off according to the NFT so that the transferee begins gameplay at the same level, with the same score, and/or with the same points accumulation as the transferor."
While these are interesting ideas and still being worked out, they also somewhat detract from the main reason why gamers play these games; for fun. Whether or not someone would want a NFT to 'skip parts' or 'continue from someone else's gameplay' remains to be seen, but like anything, I can imagine there could be a market for it even if it is against the spirit of enjoying the game in its entirety.
More news is likely to emerge down the line on how Sony plan to further enhance their ideas in terms of NFTs on their platform, but there is enthusiasm for this technology even if it has been dampened over the last year or so. Many in the crypto space know there are benefits for NFTs beyond artwork and play-2-earn games, and having a company like Sony on board could project NFTs back into the spotlight in a positive way.
