Soneium
An onchain entertainment economy. Thats is the news from Sony and their blockchain Soneium, where they will create their economy powered by Tokenized IP along with plans to launch $SONEIUM. The plans will see Sony aim to connect entertainment intellectual property (IP), creators, developers, fans, and investors through a single on-chain economy. The plans are ambitious. The execution? It remains to be seen.
Sony has been in the news a lot recently, from their ending of physical games to the jailbreaking of PS5's. None has been good for Sony's PR but their latest moves will aim to push Soneium, which already supports more than 250 applications across gaming, music, anime, film, collectibles, and fan creations, into the fore of blockchain and gaming.
No launch date has been given for Soneium nor have they provided any details about its supply, distribution, or token generation event. The announcement does mean the potential for creators and rights holders to establish new means of allowing fans to actively participate in supporting entertainment properties.
Creators and entertainment companies will therefore be in a position to create and issue IP Tokens. These tokens will be linked to individual artists, studios, or specific entertainment titles and will give the holders the chance to either hold them as digital collectibles or use them as fungible assets within an individual property’s economy. This could lead to the tokens being used in new game releases such as GTA 6 although nothing has been confirmed in this regard.
Soneium Portal will be the dedicated platform where users will be able to discover tokenized entertainment projects and participate in their financing. Think of it as similar to ICO launches only in the entertainment industry. Records of creative works and ownership information will be maintained on an IP Registry, while an IP Execution Layer will handle licensing payments and revenue distributions. Sony plans to make use of ERC-8432, a proposed Ethereum standard, for their smart contracts.
