Today I will be looking at a story which has emerged from Russia, where a Russian citizen has been charged with treason after it was discovered he had transferred crypto in support of the Ukrainian Army war efforts.
Treason in Russia
A citizen in Russia was arrested for allegedly sending crypto to Ukraines armed forces, and therefore is facing treason charges. According to the Russian news agency Tass, they have reported that the citizen is a resident of the Far Eastern territory of Khabarovsk Krai, which is located along the Pacific Ocean and across the sea from Japan.

Several members of the FSB, Russia’s secret service, were on hand to arrest the citizen and they will now be detained while awaiting the outcome of the charges. The offence includes sending tokens to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to a spokesperson from the FSB’s Center for Public Relations:
“A resident of the Sovetsko-Gavansky District of Khabarovsk Krai was intercepted committing illegal actions. The individual was involved in committing treason in the form of financial assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in its actions directed against the security of the Russian Federation.”
The FSB also went on to explain that the individual had been “stopped” while “using cryptocurrency tools” to “transfer personal funds. They noted how the individual had been making these donations via third parties, by sending their crypto donations to people who reside in the territory of Ukraine, and this was done with the use of a foreign charitable foundation.
The crypto was sent to organisations which were looking to raise money in an attempt to acquire unmanned thermal imaging sights, aircraft, ammunition, and medical uniforms for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The detainment of the citizen following a host of new regulations introduced by the Russian authorities which include a raft of punishments for those convicted of supporting Ukraine’s war efforts. These regulations were brought into effect in April of 2023 and have very severe punishments. In ordinary circumstances, under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code, a citizen in Russia convicted of treason can be jailed for a period of between 12 and 20 years. However, with the updates, anybody committing treason in support of Ukraine can be imprisoned for life.
The FSB have made it clear their Investigation Department has initiated a criminal case against the individual, while other investigations into the matter are ongoing. During 2022 alone there were a reported 22 cases of treason under investigation within the country, while the first five months of 2023 saw a reported 21 treason probes.
