'Onchain' Search
During the month of May 2024 the term “onchain” saw a mammoth surge in Google search interest. It reached a new all time high, as indicated by data from Google Trends. Over the course of the past five years the term had generally remained below 25 out of 100 in terms of global search interest, barring a temporary spike to around 30 in March 2024. However, between the 26th of May and 1st of June 2024 the search interest for “onchain” skyrocketed to a perfect score of 100 on the index.
With the increase in searches it demonstrates how society is adapting and accumulating the terminology and knowledge of the crypto space. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju noted on X:
“Once tech jargon, ‘on-chain’ is now widely known. The next step is to record everything on-chain. The learning phase is over. A new era is coming.”
It has also been revealed that Nigeria saw the highest interest in searching for the term over the past 30 days, with Afghanistan and Ethiopia the next nations where the term was most searched.
Users who used Google to search for the term “onchain” also frequently searched for “onchain token” or “onchain coin” or “onchain crypto.” A marketing slogan employed by Coinbase to promote their layer-2 network base was also a popular search, being the term “onchain summer.”
The surge in onchain interest also corresponds to some significant developments in the crypto space.
These onchain metrics have also played a role in predicting the future trajectory of Bitcoin. Analysts make use of these various onchain indicators to predict and provide insight into the market and its direction.
