Moonpay Secures MiCA Approval

Moonpay Secures MiCA Approval

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the recent approval for Moonpay in terms of MiCA requirements.

Moonpay Secures MiCA Approval

The crypto payment company Moonpay has managed to secure its license from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets to ensure it is in line with the new European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations. This news was announced as the end of the implementation phase of the Markets in Crypto-Assets framework took place on the 30th of December.

These MiCA regulations will establish a unified legal framework for digital assets across the European Economic Area (EEA) and will aim to improve consumer protection, transparency, and market stability. The certification is huge news for Moonpay as they continue to demonstrate their adherence with the rigorous standards in place. They have now positioned themselves in a prime place to expand their services and be a leader when it come to innovation in the European crypto ecosystem.

Ivan Soto-Wright, MoonPay’s CEO and co-founder, noted:

“This approval underscores MoonPay’s commitment to regulatory excellence and our mission to build a trusted bridge between traditional finance and the crypto economy. MiCA is a turning point for the European digital asset industry, and we’re proud to have collaborated with the Dutch AFM to achieve this milestone. This milestone is not just about compliance; it’s about solidifying the crypto industry’s place in the global financial system. We’re eager to deepen collaborations with regulators, businesses, and users as we shape the future of digital payments.”

With the implementation phase of MiCA complete, authorities are now able to enforce rules on certain crypto providers which operate within the EU. The MiCA framework will now officially take full effect and it will represent a major step forward for the European crypto landscape. This is the beginning of the 18 month transitional phase and means EU member states can allow crypto asset service providers to continue operating in their respective jurisdictions. This is part of the “grandfathered in” process, which basically means companies already operating in accordance with existing laws will be allowed to continue offering their services until July 2026 or until authorities decide on their licenses.

With their MiCA approval now in place Moonpay will be able to continue offering their fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat payment services across Europe. The company currently operates in over 180 countries and supports over 100 digital assets. Moonpay was founded back in 2018 and recent reports have suggested they are in the process of an acquisition of Helio Pay. This is a cryptocurrency e-commerce platform and the deal would be worth $150 million. It would mark MoonPay’s largest acquisition to date and would enhance Moonpay even further as a crypto merchant.
