Good day everyone,
I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the news of French Investigators beginning an investigation into the cryptocurrency exchange Binance over potential money laundering fraud.
Money Laundering Investigation Into Binance
The world's largest crypto exchange Binance is under investigation in France for alleged money laundering. This allegations are believed to be linked to drug trafficking, tax fraud, and unregulated promotions in France. The authorities in France opened the investigation on Tuesday the 28th of January over alleged violations of anti-money laundering and terrorist financing laws.
The public prosecutor in France revealed that Binance is “likely to have assisted in habitual money laundering, particularly in connection with drug trafficking and tax fraud.” These activities are said to have occurred in France and across the European Union although Binance strongly denies these allegations and have shown their disappointment at the latest scrutiny.
A Binance spokesperson stated:
“Binance is deeply disappointed to learn that JUNALCO, a Paris division of the French Public Prosecutor’s Office, has taken the decision to refer this matter, which is several years old, to the French judiciary for further investigation. While we do not usually comment on legal proceedings as a matter of policy, Binance fully denies the allegations and will vigorously fight any charges made against it.
Binance’s advances in AML and compliance have already been recognized by leading authorities including FinCEN, the DOJ and OFAC, among other things noting that Binance has ‘implemented enterprise-wide AML/CFT,’ ‘implemented Financial Action Task Force standards for AML and KYC,’ and ‘improved employee AML/CFT training.'”
The investigation will expand upon an old inquiry which looked into whether or not Binance marketed its services to French consumers without proper regulatory approval. That investigation saw Binance accused of conducting promotional campaigns in France before it was registered with local regulators. This is a violation under French law, and this latest investigation comes following growing regulatory pressure on Binance globally.
Back in 2023 the exchange was fined $4.3 billion by the United States authorities for failing to implement adequate anti-money laundering measures and for violating international sanctions. It was also in that same year that Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) stepped down as CEO before being sentenced to prison.
Have a great day.
Peace. CryptoGod-1.
