Ledger Co-Founder David Balland Had His Hand Mutilated
The co-founder of Ledger, David Balland, was abducted in France along with his wife in what ended up being a 48 hour ordeal which involved a crypto ransom. Balland is the ex-Ledger co-founder of the French cryptocurrency hardware wallet and both himself and his wife were part of the ordeal which ended up in severe injuries to one of his hands.
On the 21st of January the couple were abducted from their home in central France and it was the beginning of a 48 hour ordeal which saw the couple held in separate locations. The Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed that the kidnappers demanded and partially received a cryptocurrency ransom.
Over 90 police officers were involved in the rescue operation, with France’s elite tactical police force GIGN involved in successfully freeing Balland on the 2nnd of January. His wife was discovered unharmed the following day, tied up in a vehicle in the Essonne region. Injuries were suffered by Balland during the abduction although the extent was not specified. He is currently receiving medical treatment while authorities continue their investigation.
A total of ten individuals are being questioned in connection with what officials describe as a targeted crime. Balland no longer has ties to Ledger since leaving in 2021 but the company’s CEO, Pascal Gauthier, commented on the situation. He expressed his relief that Balland and his wife are safe, stating:
“We are deeply relieved that David and his wife have been released and are now safe. We respected law enforcement requests around safeguarding critical details of the ongoing investigation and appreciated members of the press who did the same.”
