Kamala Harris at Bitcoin Conference?
Rumours have been circulating that Kamala Harris’ campaign is considering making an appearance at the upcoming Bitcoin Conference as they are in discussions with Bitcoin Magazine. David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, noted that they are “in talks with Kamala Harris campaign for her to speak at the conference.”
Bailey noted that Harris’ appearance could “reset the Democrat positioning on the fastest growing voter block in the country" although it was later revealed that she would not be attending or speaking at the event as was later revealed by David Bailey. He noted that it was no surprise the democrat candidate would not be attending, and also suggested her absence may be due to the current administration’s approach to crypto regulation
He went on to note that the imprisonment of Ross Ulbricht, founder of dark web marketplace the 'Silk Road' could have posed another stumbling block for Harris. Bailey stated:
“What can she say to us when she’s actively imprisoning developers, forcing our industry overseas, attacking PoW… it would have been a disaster for her.”
It was also claimed by Billionaire investor Mark Cuban that Harris “will be far more open to business, [artificial intelligence], crypto and government as a service” compared to President Biden. He noted this when speaking to Politico, and his endorsement will only further underscore the potential for Harris to carve out a distinctive niche within her party. She has the ability to position herself as a forward thinking leader, with an appreciation and openness towards the tech sector.
Harris’ team has reportedly reached out to several cryptocurrency executives for policy input ahead of the Democratic National Convention and leaders in the Tech community are seeing this as a strategic opportunity for Harris to gather support in Silicon Valley. A pro-innovation stance will certainly appeal to the masses, and Box CEO Aaron Levie noted that a credible pro-tech policy framework could earn Harris the backing of “a dozen-plus tech CEOs.”
Although Harris will not speak at the Bitcoin Conference, many believe her outreach to crypto leaders could be strengthened and in turn signal an alignment with the wider cryptocurrency community. Given the current administration’s more cautious approach till now, it would be a welcome change from the democrat candidate. Following her endorsement from Biden more than $100 million has been raised in the first 48 hours, and a pro-innovation platform could further enhance Harris’ fundraising effort.
As for the Republicans, former President Trump has seen his odds of winning the 2024 Presidential Election have surged following a failed assassination attempt. With rumours that Trump could designate Bitcoin as a strategic asset during the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville, many are anticipating a potential surge in Bitcoin price activity.
If the United States moves to make Bitcoin a strategic reserve for the US Treasury then it is likely that other nations will follow suit. The U.S. government currently holds around $5.5 billion worth of Bitcoin, and they could look to convert these seized assets into a strategic reserve to back the dollar with Bitcoin.
The Bitcoin 2024 Conference will take place between the 25th and 27th of July in Nashville, and will provide an ideal platform for such a ground-breaking announcement.
