Harris Remains Vague on Crypto Regulation

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at how Kamala Harris maintained her vague stance when it comes to promising cryptocurrency regulatory framework during a campaign speech in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Crypto Regulations

As part of a campaign speech by Kamala Harris at Erie, Pennsylvania, the democratic nominee failed to give any specific information regarding a much-anticipated crypto regulatory framework. This followed on from earlier promises of an introduction of protections for digital assets ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The former prosecutor did not make any address directly towards the cryptocurrency community during her appearance at the Erie Insurance Arena.

She instead focused on speaking about the creation of an “opportunity economy” for American citizens. This is a message which is aimed towards undecided Black male voters, who are considered crucial for swinging the election in her favour. Among that category over 20% of Black men have owned or currently invest in digital assets. Getting them on her side would be crucial in winning the election. An agenda released by her campaign this week states:

“Vice President Harris appreciates the ways in which new technologies can broaden access to banking and financial services. She will make sure owners of and investors in digital assets benefit from a regulatory framework. This ensures that Black men and others who participate in this market are protected.”

Along with crypto regulations, Kamala Harris is also focusing on broader issues in her campaign. She plans to legalise recreational marijuana, increasing investment in Black male teaching opportunities, and providing one million forgivable loans of up to $20,000 for Black entrepreneurs. These are all part of her “Opportunity Agenda for Black Men” initiative aimed towards Black men, but some political analysts view this as a late effort by Harris to reclaim support from Black male voters. This is a demographic which Republican nominee Donald Trump has been making headway with. However many have raised the question over her inclusivity approach to the election, with much of her latest round of promises aimed solely at Black Americans. Others have questioned whether or not her apparent attempts at showing support towards the crypto industry will extend beyond the Black community.

Trump is considered the more crypto-friendly candidate and has even made promises to fire current United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler and make the United States the Bitcoin capital of the world if he wins the race for the Oval Office this November. During the Bitcoin 2024 Conference in Nashville Trump made a speech where he noted:

“We will have regulations, but from now on, the rules will be written by the people who love your industry, not hate your industry.”

Given that Harris has recently shown a newfound warmth towards the blockchain sector, some feel this may help her to gain the crucial votes in her aim to win the race for the White House. Chris Larsen, the co-founder of Ripple, told CNBC on Monday:

“She knows people who have grown up in the innovation economy her whole life."

He also added that he believed Harris understood the concerns facing the crypto industry “on a fundamental level.” Given that national polls are basically split, it remains to be seen whether or not Harris will be able to beat Trump in the final hurdles of the race. Crypto politics is being seen as a crucial part of this race and a major issue for the U.S. political landscape. The new approach by Harris has seen some backlash from the wider crypto community, with many arguing that crypto is meant to be for everyone, where anyone can participate without discrimination. Others have also pointed out that her plan remains vague with little clarity given on how she intends to protect the crypto interests of Black Americans. Others also fear her promises regarding regulatory oversight will ultimately lead to nothing more than increased government control over the sector. Finally, the biggest question is whether or not this is just a campaign tactic by Harris in an attempt to appeal towards Black voters rather than a genuine effort to promote financial inclusion.

Have a great day.

Peace. CryptoGod-1.
