The global governing body for soccer, FIFA, recently announced a partnership with blockchain gaming studio Mythical Games to announce the development of “FIFA Rivals,” a free-to-play soccer game set to launch on iOS and Android in the summer of 2025. The game will work as a real-time arcade style game where players will be able to manage their own soccer club while also competing against other players around the globe.
The game is set to deliver an unprecedented gaming experience for fans of soccer around the world. Mythical Games have described the game as an opportunity for players to “build their squad, dominate the competition, and create their legacy.” The CEO of Mythical Games, John Linden, showed his optimism about the game’s potential audience and cited the success of NFL Rivals, which attracted over 6 million players despite a smaller fan base.
Soccer has a massive global appeal, with an estimated 5 billion viewers tuning into the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This puts FIFA in a position to reach over 100 million users for the game, according to Linden. The game will operate on the Mythos blockchain, supported by the Polkadot network. The collaboration will add to the FIFA portfolio of gaming and form an essential part of the non-simulation category. The agreement also underscores FIFA’s commitment to exploring new, globally accessible digital frontiers and enhancing fan engagement through emerging technologies.

The opportunity for players to own and monetize in-game assets within a play-to-earn economy is part of the overall appeal. The game’s development is supported by the Mythos Foundation, an initiative launched by Mythical Games in 2022 to onboard gamers and developers into its ecosystem.
Players will be able to build, level up, and enhance their lineups, and then use their teams against other players in real-time PvP arcade-style gameplay. The game will be free-to-play and will include in-game and web marketplaces that utilize the Mythos blockchain to allow players to own, buy, sell, and trade their favourite football stars.

The recent surge in sports clubs exploring partnerships with blockchain firms has seen the likes of French Football club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) partner with blockchain platform Matchain to enhance their fan engagement while also enhancing data security through Web3 innovations. Back in August Inter Miami announced a partnership with Polkadot to enhance fan engagement through blockchain applications. The governing body of European Football, UEFA, also are reportedly looking to secure sponsors in the crypto sector for the upcoming 2024-2027 cycle of its prestigious men’s Champions League (UCL) club competition.
