Good day everyone,
I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the latest scam impacting crypto users.
Fake Ledger Letter Latest Crypto Phishing Scam
A new threat is facing the crypto world as fake letters which claim to be Ledger are being sent out as part of a phishing scam. The CEO of BitGo, Mike Belshe, was one of the first to raise awareness of the attack. The phishing scam is targeting crypto holders via the postal service. The scammers are impersonating hardware wallet maker Ledger and sending fake letters urging users to “validate” their wallets or risk losing access to funds. Mike Belshe shared an image of the fake letter, which has a QR code on it, and noted that it is likely linked to a phishing site designed to steal private keys.
The letter which Mike Belshe shared had been sent through the United States Postal Service (USPS) and shows a change in tactics by the scammers from digital to physical social engineering. Another recipient of the letter, Troy Lindsey, noted the issue on social media by stating “These are all scams. Do not fall for any of these.” The warning comes among growing concerns regarding the levels of phishing schemes which have a level of credibility in an aim to trick crypto users into believing they are legitimate and exposing their sensitive data.
Phishing attacks have been on the increase and back in April an elderly person lost $330 million in Bitcoin in a scheme which was confirmed by blockchain investigator ZackXBT. The crime was linked to individuals operating from a scam call center in Camden, UK. He stated:
"Two suspects in the $330 million heist include 'Nina/Mo' — a Somalian who operates a call scam centre in Camden, UK — and an accomplice 'W0rk,' who assisted with the site and call."
Coinbase were also at the centre of a scam earlier this month as they were the target of a ransom attempt after customer support contractors leaked user data. The attackers demanded $20 million, which the exchange refused to pay. Coinbase have stated that no private keys or account access were compromised but that the leaked data included names and contact information. The exchange have been criticized for their lack of security which allowed such a breach and could potentially lead to real-world harm for exposed customers.
Have a great day.
Peace. CryptoGod-1.
