Did Zelenskyy Wear a Suit?

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the controversy on Polymarket regarding whether or not Ukrainian President Zelenskyy wore a suit.

Did Zelenskyy Wear a Suit?

In this crazy world of people gambling on basically everything imaginable there has been a major bet taking place on whether or not Ukranian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy would wear a suit. This is a typical representation of a nations leader in diplomatic situations, but it has also caused quite the stir. The crypto betting market Polymarket created a betting market posing this exact question in relation to whether or not Zelenskyy would wear a suit before July. To settle the bet, a photo or video must show Zelenskyy wearing a suit between May 22 and June 30. Almost $79 million was put down in betting volume as users flocked to the site to have their say.

The result initially landed on “yes,” but has been disputed twice since and now awaits a final decision. This comes as on July 1 Polymarket said it was aware of a dispute on this market, and that at the time, “a consensus of credible reporting has not confirmed that Zelenskyy has worn a suit.” Why all the commotion? Well simply put it seems nobody really knows what is considered a suit. One renowned fashion industry commentator hasn’t helped, calling an outfit worn by Zelenskyy at a June 24 NATO meeting in the Netherlands “both a suit and not a suit.”

Zelensky’s wardrobe decisions have become a hot-button topic since disastrous meeting with the United States President Donald Trump back in February. Zelensky’s signature military-esque sweatshirt, donned as an act of solidarity with Ukrainian troops fighting Russia’s invasion, was criticised by Trump, who stated:

“You’re all dressed up today.”

Since this moment there have been multiple betting markets on whether Zelensky will wear a suit and this most recent market is causing the most controversy. Some claim it was a suit while others state it was a fitted blazer with a collared shirt and long pants. Moreover, others feel the use of trainers disqualify it from the suit classification. Zelenskyy’s outfit, a dark jacket, collared shirt, and long pants, is at the heart of the debate. Some believe it constitutes a formal suit as it’s all made from a similar cloth, with similar colors and has a formal appearance like a suit, with cuts and style being irrelevant.

Those who oppose this theory argue it’s a black shirt and a black jacket that resembles a casual blazer rather than a traditional suit jacket, and his trainers don’t match the rest of the outfit, making it not technically a full traditional suit. Even ChatGPT got in on the debate, with the AI stating the outfit was not considered a suit as it lacks key elements of a traditional suit. It called it a military-style field jacket or tactical coat.

The Canadian men’s fashion industry writer and commentator Derek Guy, also known as the menswear guy on X, added his own thoughts by stating in a June 26 post that it is technically “both a suit and not a suit.” . A similar Polymarket betting market from back in May was also in dispute as Zelenskyy wore a similar-looking outfit in a meeting in Germany, as per the tweet below by Derek Guy. Polymarket eventually determined that it wasn’t a suit, but it will be very interesting to see how this current market settles.
