In this post I will be looking at the news of a well-funded political action committee (PAC) which is backed by prominent figures from the cryptocurrency industry and has set its sights on key Senate races to shift the balance of power in Congress.
Changing of the Guard
A political action committee (PAC) known as Fairshake has recently spent over $10 million successfully to successfully oppose a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in California. They are now planning to concentrate their efforts on races in Ohio, Montana, Maryland, and Michigan. Fairshake has so far amassed a staggering $85 million in funding and the majority of this has come from major crypto players Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and Andreessen Horowitz.
The plans of the PAC are to now allocate resources to the general elections in Ohio and Montana, as well as the Democratic primaries in Maryland and Michigan. Given the significance of these states, mainly due to vulnerable Democratic senators up for re-election, the group is looking to cause some disruption especially with some senators who have previously expressed scepticism or criticism towards cryptocurrencies.
In Ohio the Senator Sherrod Brown proposed a nationwide ban on cryptocurrencies back in December 2022 after the collapse of FTX. In a similar move Montana’s Senator John Tester has been dismissive of crypto and often reaffirmed his stance the he sees no reason for the existence of crypto. While Fairshake has not explicitly announced opposition to these senators, their ideals and indication to participate in those specific races has all but announced their intent.
One potential scenario is Brown and Tester earning the PAC’s support if they adopt more crypto-friendly positions. While Fairshake have yet to disclose the timeline for deciding which candidates to endorse in the Ohio and Montana races, they have emphasised that they will be evaluating multiple factors before any decision is made. This will include a candidate’s stance on crypto, viability, election significance, and the potential impact of the PAC’s involvement.
In Michigan, Fairshake will engage in the Democratic Senate primary set for August. Currently congresswoman Elissa Slotkin currently leads the race, and although she has not publicly discussed crypto extensively, she has acknowledged the need for politicians to disclose their cryptocurrency trades. Among her opponents include actor Hill Harper, who had previously launched an app to encourage people of colour to engage with cryptocurrencies.
In Maryland’s May Democratic Senate primary, Fairshake will participate with candidates David Trone, co-founder of Total Wine, and Angela Ashbrooks, a local politician, facing off. So far neither of these candidates have prominently addressed crypto on their campaign websites or made public statements on the subject.
The Democrats now hold a narrow 51-49 majority in the Senate. These four races could significantly impact the power dynamics in Washington if any change in dynamics takes place during the elections, which will potentially see a new set of voices to address cryptocurrency. With the substantial funding from the crypto industry behind them, Fairshake aims to ensure that candidates elected in November will advocate for the establishment and adoption of much-needed regulations for the cryptocurrency industry.
Currently reports state that 73% if US voters are of the belief that US presidential candidates should have an informed perspective on innovative technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency. Another report from Coinbase stated that California voters who possess cryptocurrencies are likely to have a significant impact on the 2024 elections. The report stated that 78% of crypto holders in the state believe that policymakers should support “new, innovative, and disruptive technologies” and express their intention to vote for candidates who align with these views.
