Welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the unique opportunity for a new wave of Chinese AI startups given the lack of OpenAI's ChatGPT in China.
Chinese AI Startups
With the absence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in China there has been a new wave of Chinese AI startups vying to fill the void and establish themselves as leaders in the generative AI space. With the backing of major regional investors the startups are developing advanced AI systems which are capable of producing various types of content. These can range from images and text to music, and will create a major challenge to OpenAI’s global supremacy.
There have been four key startups in the Chinese AI sector, with each of these four achieving unicorn status with valuations exceeding $1 billion. The four include Zhipu AI, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, and 01.ai. The four all have unique features which appeal to the wider Chinese market, and are backed in substantial ways.
Zhipu AI is backed by China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba, along with Tencent and VC firm Hongshan (previously Sequoia China). They have the leading valuation of $2.5 billion. Their team is focused on providing comprehensive AI solutions and have amassed over 800 employees. Part of their overall aim is building large language models that can handle long content inputs.
Moonshot AI are valued at $2.5 billion while targeting students and office workers with its text summarization technology. They make use of a chatbot known as Kimi, which has seen explosive growth and over 12 million visits in March alone.
MiniMax is based in Shanghai and it has taken a unique approach in employing anime-themed characters to engage the gaming market. Also valued at $2.5 billion, their interactive avatars can generate responses, jokes, and even flirt with users.
01.ai has a valuation of $1.2 billion and focuses on open-source models specifically tailored for the Chinese market. This includes the productivity-focused Wanzhi and was developed by former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee. This project has been funded by Alibaba and his firm Sinovation Ventures.
There are several more Chinese companies at play in the space, with many funded by major players in its own technology market. The large cloud companies such as Baidu and Alibaba are involved in the space, along with social media players ByteDance and Tencent, and tech companies SenseTime, iFlyTek, Megvii and Horizon Robotics. There has also been input research institutes which are all aiding the effort. There are approximately 262 Chinese AI startups offering ChatGPT alternatives to the Chinese market and the race for AI dominance is beginning to offer new possibilities for the industry.
While the race between the US and China accelerates in the AI space, chip quality and availability will dictate the overall winners in the generative AI era. China is currently looking to produce its own chips or get more from the market leader Nvidia. Currently there is a gap between the U.S. and its tech rival China, and ChatGPT is seen as the benchmark for Chinese companies.
Nearly half of the $42.5 billion invested globally in artificial intelligence companies was spent in the U.S. investment market last year. In the U.S., VCs and corporate investors drove AI investment to $31 billion across 1,151 deals, led by large outlays in OpenAI, Anthropic and Inflection. There was only $2 billion in 68 deals in China for comparison. However back in 2022 China did experience a $5.5 billion investment across 377 deals. Current restrictions on of U.S. venture investment into China has been attributed to the fall-off.
Chinese AI developers still largely rely on foreign hardware, particularly from U.S. companies, with Nvidia having the chip market cornered. With tensions ongoing between the U.S. and China over technology innovation and national security issues, there has been a split in gen AI development. With regulations and bans over sensitive, cutting-edge technologies, the most likely outcome will be AI ecosystems in both China and the US.
