Binance Executives held in Confinement by Nigerian Authorities

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all well and had an excellent week so far, welcome to CryptoGod-1’s blog on all things crypto. In this post I will look at the recent news of Binance executives being held in confinement in Nigeria over the past two weeks.

Binance Executives

The worlds largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has seen two senior executives detained against their will by Nigerian authorities for the past two weeks. Tigran Gambaryan, who leads Binance’s criminal investigations team, and Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance’s regional manager for Africa based in Kenya, were taken into custody by authorities in Nigeria and had their passports taken while being confined to government property in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

The events began on the 26th of February, 2024, when Gambaryan and Anjarwalla arrived in Abuja to address the ongoing dispute between Binance and the Nigerian government. At the time the government had ordered the country’s telecoms to block access to Binance and other cryptocurrency exchanges. This was due to the devaluation of the national currency, the naira, and alleged facilitation of “illicit flows” of funds. Things did not go as planned and the pair of executives were taken to their hotels after their initial meeting and then moved to a government-run guesthouse by Nigeria’s National Security Agency.

Both families of Gambaryan and Anjarwalla have expressed deep concern and frustration over the lack of information and uncertainty surrounding the situation. Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, noted:

“There’s no definite answer for anything: how’s he’s doing, what’s going to happen to him, when he’s coming back. And not knowing that is killing me.”

While there have been visits from a US State Department official and a representative from the UK foreign office, the executives have not been able to communicate privately due to the presence of Nigerian government guards during these meetings. Their families have also noted that Gambaryan and Anjarwalla were briefly transferred to a local hospital when Anjarwalla fell ill. There is a suspicion that this may have been due to malaria, although he has since been returned to the government property where both men continue to be held.

Binance have so far declined to comment or provide details regarding the accusations or demands made by the Nigerian government. A spokesperson for the company did note that they are working collaboratively with Nigerian authorities to secure the safe return of the executives. The spokesperson also noted that the professionalism and integrity of Gambaryan and Anjarwalla and expressed hope for a swift resolution to the matter.

Given Gambaryan’s reputation as a former US federal agent specialising in cryptocurrency-related investigations it comes as a surprise with a dash of irony given his detention. Binance made an effort to improve their own compliance with regulations and cooperate more closely with law enforcement when they recruited him.

Before being hired by Binance Gambaryan was involved in high-profile cases, including the investigation into the Silk Road dark-web drug market and the takedown of the Welcome to Video crypto-based child sexual abuse materials network.

Last week Binance noted they would suspend NGN withdrawals after the 8th of March due to regulatory scrutiny. The Nigerian government has already imposed a $10 billion fine on Binance as part of its crackdown on the platform in an effort to stabilise the nation’s local currency. While it is a staggering sum, the road forward for Binance, along with both Gambaryan and Anjarwella seemingly is at an impase until Binance and the Nigerian government come to an agreement.

Have a great day.

Peace. CryptoGod-1.
