Good day everyone,
I hope you are all well and had an excellent week, welcome to CryptoGod-1’s blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the recent decision of Binance to cease its Visa debit card services in the European Economic Area (EEA).
Binance / Visa
A few months back Binance announced the termination of its partnership with both Visa and Mastercard, and now the world's largest cryptocurrency trading platform is ceasing service of its Visa debit card in the European Economic Area (EEA). From the 20th of December 2023 Binance will ends its Visa debit card services within the EEA, as announced in a blog post on the 20th of October 2023. Binance exchange accounts will remain unaffected, and any users will be able to continue using their physical or virtual cards as usual until the specified date.
"Binance Card services will no longer be offered in the EEA, but you can use your existing physical or virtual card as usual until December 20, 2023, 00:00 (UTC+0). Your Binance account will not be affected. We apologize for any inconvenience."
The Visa debit card was introduced by Binance into the EEA back in September 2020, and had plans to extend its services into both Russia and the United States. The card allowed users to convert the cryptocurrencies held in their Binance accounts into local currencies. Users were then able to make both in-store and online purchases. Binance promoted the card as a means for residents within the EEA to convert and spend cryptocurrencies at over 60 million online and physical stores across the EEA. This included all 27 European Union member states, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
"With the Binance Card, European residents can convert and spend cryptocurrencies in over 60 million online and physical stores."
The news has drawn attention to the impact it will have on the Ukrainian Refugee Crypto Cards program, a program designed for verified refugees. This change may pose challenges for some but Binance has assured users that their main accounts in Europe will not be affected. Transactions can still be made through the Binance Pay app, but it is important to note that this can come with reduced acceptance compared to the Visa cards. Users will be given the option to order replacement cards until the 6th of December 2023, and the cashback rewards program will continue to operate,.
Setbacks
The ending of Binance's Visa debit card services in the EEA is part of a larger series of setbacks for the exchange. This comes following the termination of Binance and Visa's partnership last August. In September, Mastercard followed suit in terminating its partnership with Binance in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Bahrain. These moves have been seen in the context of Binance's ongoing regulatory struggles.
On top of these issues are the fact Binance had to limit users in accessing the Paysafe option for depositing and withdrawing EURO in certain countries. This is due to the payments processor Paysafe dropping its services to the exchange.
Back in the United States, Binance.US has suspended U.S. dollar deposits back in June 2023 and issued warning to users about potential withdrawal issues. The exchange partnered with MoonPay to ensure U.S. users were able to purchase USDT on the platform. It has also recently announced that U.S. customers could withdraw dollars from their accounts by converting them into stablecoins.
With growing regulatory scrutiny in the United States, Binance has been dealing with the lawsuit of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against both the exchange and its CEO Changpeng Zhao. These lawsuits are based on alleged securities rule violations. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) also sued Binance for allegedly disregarding rules and granting American users access to the exchange.
With the mounting regulatory pressure, Binance has experienced increasing isolation from the traditional financial system. The exchange also faced limitations with the U.S. banking system back in February, while it was also no longer able to accept certain bank transfers in Australia in May 2023. The exchange also had to shut down Binance Connect Service, which had allowed businesses to accept crypto payments via Visa and Mastercard.
Binance's relationship with major card providers has deteriorated in recent months, but the exchange still has other traditional financial institutions such as PayPal which have shown interest in expanding into digital currencies. Visa has announced its own expansion of USDC stablecoin settlement capabilities to the Solana blockchain, and created partnerships with Worldpay and Nuvei for pilot programs. While certain services have been lost for now, the outlook for crypto users should be far from glum.
Have a great day,
Peace. CryptoGod-1.
