Argentinian Regulator Considering FATF Regulations

Argentinian Regulator Considering FATF Regulations

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all well and having an excellent day, welcome to CryptoGod-1’s blog on all things crypto. It has emerged that the South American nation is considering adopting a form of regulations set out by the Financial Task Force (FATF) as they look to gain control of money laundering issues within the nation.

Regulator wants Crypto Regulations

The top financial regulator from Argentina has stated that they want to adopt crypto regulations set out by the Financial Task Force (FATF), also known as the international money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog. This has been confirmed by Sebastián Negri, the President of the National Securities Commission, and was reported by the Argentinian media outlet Criptonoticias.

Negri noted the urgent need for “compliance with FATF standards,” which are mainly focused on the introduction of anti-money laundering protocols for crypto service providers. As part of the guidelines it includes the travel rule, which would require the sharing of originator and beneficiary information. He went on to state that Argentina would “be evaluated on its regulatory system and the effectiveness of regulations” in the near future.

Many consider this move to be another attempt by Argentina to win approval and favour with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Buenos Aires has recently tried to secure another bailout from the IMF, and they could be using this as an attempt to secure the financial bailout package this year.

Negri did note that implementing a dedicated national "crypto law" would not be necessary at this time, and that all new crypto-related legislation could be included in the clauses of a forthcoming money laundering bill. The National Securities Commission have also been in discussions with the Fintech Chamber of Argentina, which comprises the domestic crypto exchanges. They will look to work in tandem to create a registry system for exchanges and other crypto providers, while also establishing the need for operating permits, which are a key component of the FATF requirement.

Negri noted:

“[Proposed crypto] regulations will be open to public consultation. The definition of a crypto service provider is very broad, ranging from individuals to multinational exchanges. There are different kinds of risk, so we must work on different regulatory requirements.”

Argentina has long been suffering from an inflation outburst, which has seen the value of their national currency, the peso, dimmish. This is a key component in why the nation is looking for additional IMF assistance, while the citizens have been ditching the currency in favour for Bitcoin and USDT. With crypto adoption gaining pace, the national banks have made an effort to cap foreign currency buying.

Back in April 2023 Bitcoin hit an all time high price against the Argentine peso, when 1 BTC was trading at close to ARS 6,331,980 on most international exchanges. Inflation was also running at record rates, with crypto enthusiast Michael Saylor noting how it was 7.58% at the time.

The national currency is facing such issues that locals are harvesting the metals from the coins to sell, given their higher value. With Argentina facing a real crisis with their currency and crypto becoming a solution for many, the FATF chief President Raja Kumar has called for the G7 to end the "lawless space" which the financial world finds itself in, and to regulate crypto more effectively. The FATF guidelines are already part of the national law in regions like the EU and in South Korea, while other countries are also interesting in following suit.

Tough times for the South American nation, but they are managing to find some relief with crypto. It makes sense for the country to adopt regulations to create a fairer playing field for its citizens, although leveraging regulations in a bid to get monetary assistance from the IMF is not the best reason to do it. Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see how things play out in Argentina down the line.

Have a great day.

Peace. CryptoGod-1.
