Argentina: Gas to Power 1,200 ASIC Mining Rigs

Argentina: Gas to Power 1,200 ASIC Mining Rigs

Good day everybody,

Welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at a recent deal agreed by Argentina’s state-run energy provider, Fiscal Petroleum Yacimientos (YPF), to mine Bitcoin using associated gas.

Argentina Bitcoin Mining

The state-run energy provider, Fiscal Petroleum Yacimientos (YPF), in Argentina has entered into a new Bitcoin mining agreement which will see them making use of associated gas to power 1,200 ASIC mining rigs in Patagonia. As part of the deal Equinor, a Norwegian oil and gas supplier, will assist to ensure the Bitcoin mining firm Genesis Digital Assets Limited (GDA) will be able to operate without downtime or power issues.

Currently YFP is South America’s third-largest oil producer and has several exploratory oil drilling projects in Patagonia. These offer the released associated gas which can be harnessed to power the Bitcoin mining operation. The gas will be channelled to a thermal power plant with a total installed capacity of 8 MW. As part of the projects aim they are looking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also monetising associated gas. In the past, many oil firms simply burned off the associated gas in a process known as “flaring”.

YPF was nationalised by the government back in 2012 and went on to become one of Argentina’s largest energy companies. The deal will see the firms use a “mining farm” named Central Térmica Bajo del Toro, located in Rincón de los Sauces, Neuquén. They will make use of the associated gas to power this Bitcoin mining farm instead of the gas being vented into the atmosphere. As part of the announcement YPF noted that the project would allow for Bitcoin mining without affecting the availability of the national electrical energy network.

Abdumalik Mirakhmedov, the Executive President of crypto mining firm GDA, noted that Argentina is an important nation for Bitcoin mining due to its abundance of energy sources and business-friendly environment. Currently the company has around 20 Bitcoin mining farms worldwide and noted the positive impact of opening their first mining farm in Argentina will have in terms of their geographic diversification efforts. GDA believes that Bitcoin mining can have a positive effect on the environment and can be fully integrated into local communities and hope to demonstrate this with their project in Argentina’s Patagonia.

YPF have been active in the crypto mining space since 2012 while Equinor have also announced plans to incorporate crypto mining operations into their North Dakota space since 2020. The agreement between YPF, Equinor, and GDA to utilize associated gas for Bitcoin mining reflects the growing movement into this space for oil and gas companies to make innovative and environmentally friendly solutions for the by-products of their operations. The Patagonia Bitcoin mining project will look to reduce waste, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while also making efficient use of energy resources.

The move by YPF to repurpose their associated gas for Bitcoin mining should also help to mitigate any risks associated with the energy-intensive Bitcoin mining industry. GDA’s entry into the South American market is seen as a positive development for the mining firm while they demonstrate an innovative and environmentally friendly approach to their Bitcoin mining. However this is not the first move into crypto mining via the use of associated gas in Argentina. Back in September 2023 fellow Argentina-based oil explorer Tecpetrol announced their plans to operate a crypto mining farm in Western Argentina’s Vaca Muerta oil field.

As Bitcoin mining operations expand around the world Argentina and Latin America will look to keep growing their operations in the space. Not traditionally seen as a hub for Bitcoin mining in the past, Paraguay and Venezuela along with Argentina could be leading the change with Argentina seen as the ideal starting point for GDA's regional expansion. Abdumalik Mirakhmedov, the Executive President of crypto mining firm GDA, noted

"Although we've been considering expanding to Argentina for years, the political and pro-innovation climate the country has fostered for crypto – and Bitcoin specifically – has never been stronger than today. There's also a large percentage of the population in Argentina that already uses cryptocurrencies and stablecoins to hedge against high inflation. The bottom line is that crypto is a solution to these problems, and we're seeing that fact recognized by countries throughout Central and South America. We are actively looking for more countries in the region to expand to, but we are currently focused on Argentina because it provides the ideal combination of attractive electricity prices, temperature, potential for development, and sustainable energy sources."

Given the changes in Argentina since Javier Milei took power in late 2023, the bitcoin and crypto industry have been making major moves in the nation. The public sector is still working on regulating the sector as they look to fall in line with the Financial Action Task Force recommendations and the International Monetary Fund requirements laid on the nation. Argentina is also looking for companies, start-ups, and users to maintain the growing adoption. While there are still many things left to fine tune in terms of regulations in Argentina, the move by GDA is a strong indicator of the important role this country might have for the Bitcoin mining space going forward.

Have a great day.

Peace. CryptoGod-1.
