Bitcoin Carbon Footprint in Perspective

Bitcoin Carbon Footprint in Perspective

By Seeker54SO | CryptoExplorer | 10 Mar 2021

Recently, there has been a lot of coverage in the media about the carbon footprint of bitcoin mining. It is protrayed as a pointless and harmful process that is destroying our planet. Once again another evil of Crytocurrency. å90

While I agree massive energy usuage is certainly an important issue. This needs to be tackled. And it can be! Green energy sources can be used in the mining process to help combat this. So definitely some cause for concern, our planet is important.

Despite the relevance of the issue coverage of other industrial carbonprints are barely covered in main stream media. Bitcoin produces 32 mega tonnes but with a 32,000kg carbon footprint per tonne, the gold industry has a massive footprint. Gold industry is more rarely critised, it does have some more uses than just store of value. And this isn't even mentioning, coal, iron or diamond production.

I think the point of my blog post is just to share my thoughts. Trying to bring some perspective, to not demonise everything to do with crypto. Hopefully, the focus can shift to reducing emission but from many industries not just single coins. I feel the attacks on bitcoin are damaging the reputation of crypto as a whole even coins designed to be much more sustainable.
