Tokenization
The concept of tokenization has garnered increasing attention from institutional players. Notably, its primary focus within this realm has gravitated towards capital market instruments, encompassing financial products such as bank deposits, money market funds, and repurchase agreements (repos). This trend is underpinned by the understanding that in environments marked by higher interest rates, capital allocation becomes considerably more expensive compared to lower-rate counterparts. Consequently, the allure of instantaneous settlement has become increasingly evident to financial institutions, highlighting the critical role of tokenization.
Traditionally, the settlement of most conventional securities adheres to a two-business-day (T+2) timeline. During this period, funds in transit from buyers to sellers remain immobilized and underutilized. However, it is worth noting that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has recently finalized a rule change aimed at reducing the settlement period to just one business day after the trade date or T+1, set to take effect on May 28, 2024. This adjustment assumes heightened significance in markets transacting substantial volumes, ranging from hundreds of billions to over a trillion US dollars per day, particularly when nominal yields exceed 5%.
Avalanche has emerged as a prominent player, driven by a combination of institutional adoption and continuous product development. Notably, institutions of global significance, such as Citi and JP Morgan, have embraced Avalanche's subnets, underlining the growing recognition of its capabilities within the blockchain ecosystem.
Project Guardian
JP Morgan recently collaborated with blockchain platforms to test Project Guardian, focusing on using blockchain, smart contracts, and tokenization for portfolio management. The project integrates alternative and liquid assets in discretionary portfolios. Using JP Morgan's ONYX platform and the Oasis Pro asset-issuing platform, fund managers can tokenize portfolios and facilitate exchanges across different blockchains, including EVM and non-EVM, as well as private and public chains.
The project successfully demonstrated the efficiency of smart contracts in automating financial processes, reducing operational steps by 3,000 and cutting costs by nearly 20%. This highlights the benefits of blockchain in managing diverse assets within a single portfolio and the importance of interoperability.
While this is a positive step for the blockchain ecosystem, JP Morgan's future involvement with external platforms like Avalanche is uncertain. The bank has its own blockchain solutions, such as the Tokenized Collateral Network, which might overshadow Avalanche's subnets. However, Avalanche's Evergreen Subnets, launched in April, are particularly attractive for institutional use.
