Avalanche Warp Messaging

In January 2023, Avalanche introduced a new feature called Avalanche Warp Messaging (AWM) with the Banff 5 update. This trustless interchain messaging feature allows for efficient and reliable native communications across all Avalanche Subnets. Prior to this update, any project that wanted to transfer assets or data between Subnets had to set up and maintain its own bridges.

AWM allows for Subnet Validators to come together and create a BLS Multi-Signature, which verifies the authenticity of any message (such as a transfer or contract data) and can be confirmed by any other Subnet. This eliminates the need for Subnets to constantly communicate and exchange updates about changes in their validator sets in order to validate messages. This is a significant development in the roadmap for subnet adoption.

Evergreen Subnets

So far in 2023, there has been an acceleration in institutional blockchain deployment and participation in the DeFi ecosystem. However, the solutions for institutions have been divided into two camps, either utilizing private blockchains that offer permissions and controls or leveraging public blockchains through walled protocols that limit interoperability and composability. Avalanche has developed the Evergreen Subnets solution, which offers the essential permissions and controls associated with private blockchains while enabling the liquidity benefits of interoperability. This solution enables institutions to experiment with their controlled, out-of-the-box environment for R&D initiatives and production-ready use while accounting for company-specific and regulatory requirements.

Avalanche's Evergreen Subnets solution could significantly accelerate institutional participation in DeFi by providing a solution that solves the liquidity, composability, and interoperability issues associated with traditional enterprise blockchain deployments. Institutions that are more comfortable with transacting on-chain can now do so without waiting for additional capital, which could encourage further capital allocation on-chain. The initial cohort of institutional partners, including T. Rowe Price Associates, WisdomTree, Wellington Management, and Cumberland, will be leveraging the Spruce testnet to assess the benefits of on-chain trade execution and settlement across a variety of applications. The success of the initial cohort is expected to lead to subsequent cohorts, furthering the on-chain capital onboarding efforts.

In the future, Avalanche's Evergreen Subnets will have to compete with alternative solutions, such as Layer-3 blockchain deployments to the Ethereum network, which will leverage DeFi protocols and parameter customization to replicate the Evergreen solution. Overall, the development of innovative solutions such as the Evergreen Subnets is crucial for driving the growth and adoption of blockchain technology by institutions.

HyperSDK

The HyperSDK, a notable advancement in Avalanche's technology stack, has greatly enhanced the capabilities available to developers. This tool allows for the customization of virtual machines (VMs) at a granular level, tailored to the specific needs of an application. This level of customization opens up possibilities for unique use cases and improves the overall experience for end-users. In addition to the HyperSDK, Avalanche has introduced Avalanche Warp Messaging (AWM). AWM is set to revolutionize the way different subnets within the Avalanche ecosystem communicate by enabling direct and seamless transfer of data and assets. This innovation eliminates the dependency on external bridges that were previously necessary for inter-chain communications.

Together, the HyperSDK and AWM represent significant steps forward in enhancing Avalanche’s developer environment. They enable the creation of application-specific blockchains with greater efficiency and flexibility. This has not only bolstered Avalanche's attractiveness to developers but also positioned it as a stronger competitor against other blockchain technologies, such as the Cosmos SDK. These advancements reflect Avalanche's commitment to facilitating a more interconnected and user-centric blockchain ecosystem.

BTC.b

Additionally, in June 2022, Ava Labs released its AVAX-BTC bridge as part of a wider wallet rollout called “Core.” The bridge is a simple lock-and-mint design in which BTC is locked up, issuing an equivalent amount of “BTC.b” on the AVAX chain. However, Ava Labs claims the wrapping process is non-custodial, unlike the Ethereum-based version WBTC.  However, the Bitcoin bridge utilizes a 6-of-8 multisig of known custodians, meaning a high degree of trust is put into these known entities.

As of 2024, the Avalanche network has more BTC in circulation than the amount on the Bitcoin Lightning network (LN). The BTC.B token, which has been transferred to Avalanche, has reached a total of ~5700 BTC, compared to ~5000 BTC on LN. As a result, users can use BTC.B to invest in DeFi instead of using it on the Bitcoin Lightning network, making it a more attractive option.
