I don’t Want to... or How "Call to Action" (CTA) is Perturbing Our Lives

Overwhelmed by online digital marketing persuasion and artificial intelligence frustration, our Team has decided to reanalyse and redesign all our websites, applications, and social media accounts in order to eliminate "Call to Action" (CTA) phrases and buttons. It will take some time, but we will do it!

As you probably know, "Call to Action" (CTA) is a marketing and communication tool designed to prompt an immediate response, also to encourage an audience to take specific steps. These words are often designed to be attention-grabbing and persuasive, leading people to take a specific action, even when it interrupts their normal online experience.

While CTAs can be helpful in guiding users through a decision, they also perturb our lives in various ways, such as those described next.

Attention Overload

CTAs are designed to capture attention in an information-saturated world. With so many platforms using CTAs — emails, social media, advertisements — our attention becomes fragmented. This constant bombardment can lead to distraction, making it difficult to focus on important tasks of our lives.

Pressure and Anxiety

Many CTAs create a sense of urgency. Words like "Limited time offer," "Don't miss out," or "Act now!" infuse fear of missing out (FOMO), which can lead to impulsive decisions or stress over making quick choices.

Decision Fatigue

We encounter CTAs frequently in daily life, from whether to subscribe to a newsletter to deciding on an online purchase. These constant decisions can lead to decision fatigue, where the mental energy needed to make thoughtful decisions is depleted, impacting our ability to make reasoned choices in other areas of life.

Personal Data Exploitation

Many CTAs are integrated with systems that collect and use data about your behaviour. Clicking on CTAs often leads to being tracked for marketing purposes, resulting in personalized advertisements and recommendations. This kind of data exploitation can erode privacy and increase manipulation in decision-making.

Manipulative Tactics

Companies sometimes use deceptive CTAs with dark patterns — design techniques meant to trick users into clicking or making a decision they may not want, like hidden subscriptions or pre-checked boxes. This can be a form of manipulation, forcing users into actions they may not fully understand or want to take.

Consumerism and Instant Gratification

CTAs push consumerism by encouraging users to buy, download, or sign up instantly. This perpetuates a culture of instant gratification, making it more difficult for people to resist unnecessary purchases or engage in mindful consumption.

Loss of Authenticity

The omnipresence of CTAs can reduce the authenticity of online interactions, where every action — like reading an article or watching a video — is interrupted by a call to "Subscribe" or "Like." This disrupts genuine engagement and prioritizes transactional interactions over meaningful content.

Conclusion:

CTAs are embedded deeply in our digital lives, and while they can serve a purpose, they can also overwhelm, manipulate, and shift the way we think and act in the modern world.
