Flaw in Trezor Hardware Wallet (Not a Big Deal)

Flaw in Trezor Hardware Wallet (Not a Big Deal)

By CryptoOwen | crypto owen | 3 Feb 2020

As some of you crypto enthusiasts may have heard, apparently Kraken was able to hack a Trezor wallet. Full article here- https://blog.kraken.com/post/3662/kraken-identifies-critical-flaw-in-trezor-hardware-wallets/

But here's why this isn't a big deal at all, & it's nothing you should worry about. So what are the two methods to stop this from ever happening in the first place? Well the first is obvious; the second not so much...

1. Do NOT allow anyone physical access to your Trezor wallet.

-Yeah I kinda feel like this is almost a given. If you haven't stored it somewhere hidden far away from prying eyes, then you have failed the first and foremost rule of crypto security. Never allow anyone access to your hardware wallet or seed phrase. ALSO- order 2-3 extra hardware wallets so that if you ever either lost your main wallet, or someone somehow stole it from you, you could immediately get hold of a backup wallet & restore your seed phrase on there, problem solved. ANYWAY

2. Enable your BIP39 Passphrase via the Trezor Client

-Most people (including me) have little idea what this is but if you were truly worried, you could enable this for an extra safety blanket. If you are interested in this, google it & I'm sure you could find out how to do it in a few minutes.

Now that we have those two out of the way, I'm going to explain why you don't have to worry about this. BECAUSE YOU DON'T ALLOW OTHERS ACCESS TO YOUR HARDWARE WALLET FOR ANY REASON EVER. Keep it hidden well at all times. Don't take it out around others. Don't tell your friends about it....Also if some strange looking dude is hanging out in your house with a voltage glitching device, you should probably ask him to leave. "YEAH, LIKE RIGHT NOW." I don't care if he's "your roomies friend," he looks like a neckbeard version of Neo from The Matrix & will inevitably eat all your chicken tendies before trying to steal your crypto. Don't let him.

Anyway what have we learned today?

-It's possible to breach a Trezor using a voltage glitching device

-It's only possible if you tell someone where your device is, & allow someone to come into your house unsupervised, with a voltage glitching device

-If you are worried about someone stealing your device, keep backups around so you could easily restore from your seed phrase, to the backup device

-Basically you have nothing to worry about because you think ahead, store your crypto wallets safely out of reach, & if you REALLY are that worried, google "how to enable BIP39 Passphrase via the Trezor Client" so you can sleep soundly at night.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed this little write up on Trezor Wallets, I hope everyone who is reading this has a hardware wallet, & may everyone have an excellent week!! God bless, peace out

-Owen
