What Devices are People Using for Search in 2023?

If you’ve ever had a chance to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, then you might have noticed the now comical entry scene where one of the government operatives on a space station traveling to the Moon uses a phone card to contact his family on video and wish his daughter happy birthday. That movie was made in the 1970s and phone cards were commonplace a decade later, only to be replaced by pagers and then the first cellphones.

Now, in 2023, deep in the ever-evolving digital landscape, our dependence on technology continues to shape the way we access information down to daily life. In today's interconnected world, online search has become an integral functioning, even for finding groceries in stock at the supermarket. From researching topics of interest to seeking answers about the latest gossip, the devices we use play a crucial role in facilitating our online search activities. Only 25 years ago, the desk PC was the most critical device for online search. Now, voice is taking over, and mobile device search is even threatened to be knocked off its pedestal as the most used device for data searches.

Smartphones

It comes as no surprise that smartphones generally maintain their position as the go-to device for online search. But the introduction of Siri with Apple iOS devices reduced manual input considerably.

With their portability, convenience, and ever-increasing capabilities, smartphones continue to dominate the market. The rise of high-speed mobile internet connectivity and the proliferation of mobile applications have made smartphones an indispensable tool for accessing information on the go. The availability of voice assistants and integration of search engines into mobile operating systems contribute to the widespread use of smartphones for online search. The most likely replacement of the smartphone will be wearable tech that is hands-free.

Laptops and Desktop Computers

For power users and despite the prominence of smartphones, laptops computers remain essential devices for online search. These devices offer larger screens, improved multitasking capabilities, and a more comfortable typing experience, making them preferred choices for in-depth research, work-related searches, and content creation. Laptops and desktop computers continue to be favored by professionals, students, and individuals seeking a more comprehensive online search experience, as well as the ability to effectively multi-task with multiple views.

Smart Speakers and Voice-Activated Devices

In recent years, the adoption of smart speakers and voice-activated devices has seen significant growth. Powered by virtual assistants such as Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, or Microsoft's Cortana, these devices have revolutionized the way we interact with technology. Voice-activated searches have become increasingly popular due to their hands-free convenience and natural language processing capabilities. As voice recognition technology improves, more users are leveraging smart speakers to conduct online searches, perform quick tasks, and retrieve information without the need for physical interaction.

Smart TVs and Streaming Devices

Modern world participants spend an amazing amount of free time glued to the TV, so it makes sense that smart devices will dominate search, especially video consumption.

The integration of internet connectivity and apps into televisions has transformed the way we consume media and access online content. Smart TVs and streaming devices have evolved into comprehensive entertainment hubs, offering access to a wide range of digital services, including online search. Users can now explore the internet, search for information, and even browse social media platforms directly from their television screens. As streaming services gain popularity, the integration of online search functionalities into smart TVs has become increasingly valuable for users seeking quick access to relevant content.

Wearable Devices

Wearable technology, including smartwatches and fitness trackers, has witnessed a surge in popularity and usage in recent years. Although primarily designed for health and fitness tracking, wearable devices also offer the convenience of quick online searches on the go. With voice command functionalities and seamless integration with smartphones, wearable devices provide users with information at their fingertips, literally. These compact devices have become a favored choice for individuals seeking instant access to essential information without needing to retrieve their smartphones or use their hands at all. While eyeglasses are the most practical for viewing info called up on a search, audio devices are gathering inroads as well.

What’s Next? Maybe Implants…

For now smartphones continue to reign supreme as the most widely used devices for online search, but as mentioned above, voice search quickly becoming the leader in all search.

The preferences of users vary depending on their specific needs, context, and convenience. The rise of voice-activated devices and the integration of search capabilities into various devices reflect our growing desire for instant access to information in the most convenient and seamless manner possible. And this matters, especially for marketers. Being positioned with the right search channel now makes all the difference for businesses trying to grow. After all, how many of us still remember looking up a business need using the “yellow pages?”
