Been to Your Local Library Lately?

If you haven’t been to your local library in a number of years, you might want to check it out again. Where the childhood library you remember was the place where you would go borrow some books, check them out, hold onto them for about a week or two and then bring them, maybe find some more books and do it again, today’s library is a little bit different.

The modern library still has physical books to check out, as well as the periodicals available there to go through and see what’s going on with the local news. However, there’s tremendous amount of other features that are available to library patrons, and it’s entirely free.

Lots More Than Books

First off libraries give you access to online audiobook borrowing which, for example, if you drive a lot, is a great resource to, “read a book,” but not have to have the physical print in front of you. Instead said you can listen to it through your phone or radio, etc. whatever works with a digital device.

Second, some libraries have tools and equipment that you can borrow, whether it’s game consoles or repair tools or mobile computer devices or other types of equipment. Libraries are lending out tools that people can borrow, work with, try out and use for temporary purposes. Not only does it give you the ability to use something for a quick fix or a job without having to buy it, you also get access to a number of tools known you need.

Libraries are a great source for videos video games and movies. They have an extensive collection of movie DVDs as well as game CDs for various consoles, usually the most popular ones like PlayStation or Xbox. Again, it gives you a chance to try things out without having to buy them. While a library doesn’t usually have the latest copy of Starfield, they do have a pretty damn good selection of a whole lot of other titles and items that are worth checking out. So, instead of dropping even $25 or $30 on a discounted version of a game, you could play it for free and, if the game sucks, you didn’t lose anything except maybe your time testing it.

Libraries also tune you into community groups and workshops. They tend to be the number one place for in-person community meetings, which can actually be a variety of different topics ranging from archaeology to role-playing games, believe it or not. It’s worth checking out just to see what your local library has in terms of an agenda in calendar.

A Fun Throwback to Before the Internet

Yes, they are a bit old-fashioned, but I’m really glad my local libraries haven’t disappeared. Instead, they are re-creating themselves to be useful again, and it’s pretty impressive what they are coming up with.
