The Study Method That Actually Makes Things Stick

In 1885 a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus did something unusual. He spent years memorising thousands of meaningless syllables and then testing himself at different intervals to see how much he had forgotten.

What he discovered changed everything we know about learning.

He found that within 24 hours of learning something new the average person forgets more than 50 percent of it. Within a week that number climbs to roughly 80 percent. Within a month almost everything is gone unless something is done to prevent it.

He called it the forgetting curve. And if you have ever studied hard for an exam only to struggle to remember what you covered three days later you have experienced it firsthand.

The good news is that Ebbinghaus did not just discover the problem. He discovered the solution too. And once you understand it the way you study will never be the same again.

The Leaking Bucket

Most students study the same way. They read their notes. They highlight important sections. They read them again. They feel like they understand the material. They go to sleep feeling prepared.

Then they sit in the exam hall and the information that felt so solid the night before seems to have quietly evaporated.

This happens because reading and highlighting are passive activities. Your brain encounters the information but does not work hard enough to store it properly. It is like pouring water into a bucket full of holes — the information goes in but drains out almost as fast.

The forgetting curve is not a sign that you are not smart enough. It is a sign that you are using the wrong method. The bucket is not the problem. The holes are.

Effective studying is about fixing the holes — using techniques that force your brain to work hard enough with information that it decides the information is worth keeping.

How Memory Actually Works

Your brain is not a hard drive that stores everything it encounters. It is a survival machine that constantly makes decisions about what is worth remembering and what can safely be forgotten.

The rule it follows is simple — if you encounter something once and never think about it again your brain concludes it is not important and lets it fade. If you encounter something repeatedly across multiple sessions your brain concludes it must be important and stores it more permanently.

This is why cramming the night before an exam produces such poor long term retention. You encounter the information intensely once and your brain stores it just long enough to get through the next 12 hours — then releases it. The information was never transferred to long term memory because you never gave your brain a reason to keep it.

The Method That Actually Works

The solution Ebbinghaus discovered is called spaced repetition — reviewing material at increasing intervals over time rather than all at once.

Instead of studying a topic for five hours in one sitting you study it for one hour today, revisit it briefly tomorrow, review it again in three days, then again in a week and again in two weeks. Each time you review it the memory strengthens and the interval before the next review can safely be longer.

This works because each review happens just as the memory is beginning to fade — which is exactly when the brain responds most strongly to reinforcement. You are essentially catching the water just before it drains out and pouring it back in — gradually patching the holes in the bucket until it holds water reliably.

Combined with spaced repetition the single most powerful study technique ever tested is active recall — closing your notes and forcing yourself to retrieve information from memory rather than simply reading it again.

Instead of reading your notes ask yourself questions. Cover the page and try to write down everything you remember. Use flashcards. Teach the material out loud to an imaginary student. Every time you successfully retrieve something from memory you strengthen the neural pathway that holds it making it easier to retrieve next time.

The discomfort of not immediately remembering something is not a sign that you do not know it well enough. It is the feeling of your brain working hard to retrieve and strengthen a memory. That discomfort is the studying actually working.

What This Looked Like in Practice

When I was preparing for my JAMB and WAEC examinations I made the same mistake most students make at first — I read my notes repeatedly and hoped the information would stick through sheer exposure.

It did not work as well as I needed it to.

The shift happened when I started testing myself instead of reading. Instead of going through my physics notes I would close them and write down everything I could remember about a topic from scratch. The gaps in what I could retrieve told me exactly what I needed to study more — far more accurately than any amount of re-reading ever did.

For topics like heat and thermodynamics where the formulas and concepts build on each other I would review them briefly every few days rather than leaving them for weeks. By the time the exam arrived those topics felt automatic rather than memorised — because I had encountered them so many times across so many sessions that my brain had decided they were permanently worth keeping.

The Tools That Make This Easy

You do not need expensive resources to implement these techniques. Everything you need is either free or already in your hands.

Anki is a free flashcard application that automatically schedules your reviews using spaced repetition algorithms. You create cards for the material you need to learn and the app tells you exactly when to review each one based on how well you remembered it last time. It is used by medical students, law students and language learners around the world for exactly this reason.

A simple notebook works just as well for active recall. Read a section of your notes, close the book and write down everything you remember. Compare what you wrote to the original. Study the gaps. Repeat.

Past questions are one of the most underused study tools available to Nigerian students specifically. Working through JAMB and WAEC past questions does not just familiarise you with the exam format — it is active recall in its most practical form. Every question you attempt is forcing your brain to retrieve and apply knowledge rather than passively absorb it.

The Bigger Picture

Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered the forgetting curve over a century ago. The research confirming spaced repetition and active recall as the most effective study techniques has been replicated hundreds of times since then.

Yet most students still study by re-reading their notes because it feels easier and more comfortable than testing themselves. The methods that feel hardest are almost always the ones that work best — because the difficulty is the brain working hard enough to actually learn something.

Fix the holes in the bucket. Space your reviews. Test yourself relentlessly. Teach what you know out loud.

The information will stick. Not because you are smarter than everyone else — but because you are using your brain the way it was actually designed to learn.
