In recent news, OpenAI reached a deal with Apple to put ChatGPT on the Iphone and Mac. This puts to rest the question which between OpenAI or Google will win over Apple since the latter cannot produce its own AI capability. This means that foundation models are becoming core capabilities of tech companies and those who do not have it have to work with companies like OpenAI (ChatGPT) or Google (Gemini).
Data scientists use a foundation model as a starting point to develop Machine Learning (ML) models that power new applications quickly and cost-effectively in lieu of developing AI from the start. This is the same tech that taught the revolutionary AlphaZero how to play Chess, Go and other games. AlphaZero's Chess ideas like pushing the a and h pawns have been adopted by top Chess Grandmasters like Magnus Carlsen. Chess is an old game and to revolutionize it the way Alphazero, an AI, did was sensational.
My love for Chess made me digress, back to OpenAI. Recently, the company released ChatGPT-4o which can reason across text, audio and vision in real time. In the Spring Update, ChatGPT-4o showed an improved voice assistant which has a human-like way of speaking and appeared faster than the previous iteration.
Also, all of us who use ChatGPT will be able to use AI features which were previously only exclusive to premium users. This is a good news to free users as it reduces the barrier of entry to advanced features. This will result to more users being attracted to try the product. I hope #splinterlands team are taking notes since it's costly for potential new users to start playing the game compared in 2021. 😀
At the moment, it seems that OpenAI has taken the lead from its closest rival, Google Gemini, as the latter was also reported to partner with Apple. The quicker OpenAI rolls out new features, the faster it leaves the competition behind. Google is surely aware and will not rest until it catches up or take over the lead. Meanwhile, other rivals are emerging which should keep OpenAI on its toes. On the other hand, OpenAI's other partner, Microsoft has reportedly invested USD 13b in developing its own AI, Copilot+.
As usual, competitions like these benefit us users as these companies will vie for our loyalty and aggressively shower us with better and cheaper if not free features. I can't wait for AI developments in the coming months ahead.
