The Dark Side of DEX: How to Avoid Losing Your Crypto to Scams and Hacks

By bitbucket | Cloud-Labs | 19 Jun 2023

In the earlier guide, I mentioned how decentralized exchanges work perfectly fine with Metamask. This will be on safeguarding your coins while using DEXs and avoiding phishing scams.

Decentralized exchanges are also the home for spyware attacks, scams, phishing and rug pulls. You must be careful because there are always some bad actors, who try to snitch away your coins. You are your own bank in the blockchain, so stolen or lost funds can never get recovered as everything here is irreversible. Make sure you are entering the authentic or original website. This can be identified by checking the domain on the top bar of the browser every time you enter the DEXs. Fraudsters copy the original website and relocate the data/connection to their servers. You can always use coinmarketcap or coingecko to trace the authentic site. Always beware of phishing attacks, especially if you are not in private network or using public Wi-Fi.

How Scammers Take Away Your Coins

Make sure not to fall under rug pulls, and always check for the authenticity of the coin before trading one. What a fraudster does is, makes the token’s contract editable and add thousands of tokens and sell a big chunk all at once, causing the price to drop significantly. Rug pulls and scams are everywhere in crypto space, so a newer guy to crypto could easily fall into this trap. It is important to be cautious when interacting with unknown tokens or projects.

The best bet is to connect non-custodial wallet only to the platforms or websites that you trust. Also, be cautious with the offers that seem too good to be true, especially those ones that tell you to make a guaranteed high return. Avoid claiming unknown airdrops as well because their website could have malicious code embedded that could drain your funds. Research the project thoroughly before investing, including checking their whitepaper, website, and their social media presence.
