Genre: History, Comedy, Romance

Watch Quality   B+

The picture quality is excellent, but the sound seems slightly off.  It does not interfere with the dialogue, however.

Plot Summary

A slow-witted Duke and his manipulative Duchess become involved with a roguish goldsmith.  Secret agendas and shameless flattery bring chaos to the court.

Star Power   B+

The four stars play their eminently flawed characters to great comic effect.  March shows off his athleticism.

Chill Factor   A-

The raunchy humor and sexual frustration have the potential to set you up for a fun night.  Be warned, however: if your date is sensitive to infidelity, this film may create more anger than romance.

Mental Health Check   B

The film is funny and does not require an emotional investment.  However, there are a few jokes and gender stereotypes that do not conform to today's tastes.  The quick pace and high stakes do not lend to relaxation.

Overall Grade   B+

After the first few minutes, the film really picks up momentum and the absurd characters keep the viewer laughing.  It's not quite as good as the director's other comedy, My Man Godfrey, but they share parodies of class and marriage.  In this film, however, the characters are not very likable.
