Watch Quality   A+

The black and white version is of impeccable quality; the picture is so clear that it looks three-dimensional.

Plot Summary

A woman is found in a catatonic state.  At the hospital, doctors try to help her unravel the layers of relationship issues and mental illness that brought her there.

Star Power   A-

Joan Crawford is enigmatic and captivating in her portrayal of a desperate, unhinged woman.  Her facial expressions and vocal tones become more erratic to match the character's mental state.

Chill Factor   D

The atmosphere and slow descent into madness make for an unsettling experience.  You and your date may enjoy discussing theories about the film, but it is unlikely to create any sparks.

Mental Health Check   C

There are several disturbing scenes and story elements, although they unfold in a deliberate way that mutes the shock to a certain extent.

Overall Grade   B-

This movie provides a harrowing perspective on mental illness and mismatched love.  There are scenes that will stay with you after the film is over.  Unfortunately, it falls short of being truly profound because each character is too defined by a single motivation.
