I initially wrote this post for the r/cryptocurrency Reddit and it received a ton of praise and backlash. I sat on it and continued to think about it for the next few days and decided to add to it and see what the fantastic people over here thought about it. Since I wrote and posted the initial post one thing has become clear. Tomorrow the January 6th Committee is to vote and pass a referral to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to charge Former President Trump with a few different charges. It should be noted that this referral I believe will go before the whole House this week where it will again pass because the Democrats have the numbers to push it through. Now it is not known if the DOJ will follow the House's recommendation but they very well could. 

If this is done it would be something that is unprecedented and how it exactly shakes out is anyone's guess. If charges are filed though since he has recently announced that he is going to run for President again the cost of this all will fall to him and him alone. Previously because he was in office at the time and the way that the legal system works the Republican Party was on the hook for a ton of his legal bills but now that he has announced that is no longer the cause. With the news coming out now about the Trump NFT Collection selling out and how prices are now surging I am starting to wonder if doing something for the lolz or meme has just gone too far. When I heard about this collection the day before the launch I thought it was an honest to god joke. I mean the video for it looked like it was shot 30 years ago. Then it turned out that the whole idea was real I figured there was no way it would sell or be successful, especially at the comical price of $99 per NFT. Trump's supporters are known to be extremely loyal but at the same time they are not exactly the group that would buy NFTs and many are highly skeptical of them. 

Well, I was wrong and now the whole collection has sold out just one day later meaning that Trump made $4.45 million. Seeing this and watching/hearing what he says really makes me wonder what is happening in the crypto space as good projects fail but this one succeeds. Doing things for a joke was one thing but funding this guy via crypto is just a little much if you ask me. Since he is having to start footing his own bills this could easily be something that is being used to fund his defense. When you consider that he could possibly be charged still by the DOJ it is worrying to me that he might be using this to get money out of his supporters to further fund his fights against the DOJ and anyone else he is against.

Crypto and NFTs already have gotten a bad rap so for this to happen worries me because people could easily use it as an out against the whole industry. If we have a squeaky clean rep that would be one thing but that is not the case and so we have to be careful. One of the most important things in the space is that people have a right to create and sell all types of NFTs but given that the industry is still new it worries me that this could just further set back the whole industry for the sake of a man who couldn't careless.
