ArtStation which is an art portfolio platform had initially lined up an NFT launch featuring several big artists on the platform. When they announced it on Twitter however the reception was ice ice cold. Users were enraged with the idea of "environmentally negative" blockchain be used for art. While ArtStation tried its best to defend its situation it completely unraveled on social media to where they have postponed it until further notice.
The outcry was bad enough that Dapper Labs founder and CEO Roham Gharegozlou tweeted out to ArtStation to try and help them out. This is the first time I have seen people come out against blockchain as this group of followers did. They truly have no idea the powers of blockchain and how beneficial it could be. Not all blockchains use proof of work or PoW for short some use Proof of Stake or PoS which is entirely different and much more environmentally friendly.
It is rather disappointing to see the socially conscious crowd be against the future. Physical art isn't the most environmentally sound either. It is also often physically shipped auctioned and even shipped again. Shipping and processing it leads to fossil fuel emissions. The idea that people cannot see this is really beyond me.
People continue to be very short sited and I can only hope this improves in the future. There is absolutely no reason to move from a physical to a technological world especially with something like art. If power generation is what worries people then there are a ton of other things they can cut back on to fix this issue.
