NFTs have really received the most publicity when it comes to crypto and blockchain being used for mega purchases running in the millions of dollars. However, in this world of high prices items and auctions, physical world items are also being purchased with cryptocurrency as well! Most of the time when some rare gem or rock goes up for auction it doesn't really catch my attention but this one..... this one is crazy cool and the back story is just as amazing. Yes, you are seeing correctly this is a solid black diamond that weighs 555.55 carats or 111.11 grams! What makes this rock so special and unique? Well, it is due to no one being sure exactly how it was formed! The type of diamond is a carbonado diamond which are only found near the surface of the Earth. Due to its size though it is extremely rare and either formed by the vapors of an asteroid impact or my favorite possibility.... a supernovae explosion that formed a diamond-bearing asteroid that impacted Earth! These are just two crazy possibilities and insane when you think about it! The one thing that is known for sure is that it is billions of years old.
An interesting thing about this diamond is that due to the type it is its chemical composition is very unique. It is made up of traces of hydrogen and nitrogen which are common in interstellar space. This composition plays a role in the random orientation of tiny diamond grains that exist allowing for much more light being absorbed thus creating the color black. With this composition it also creates a structure that is almost impossible to cut and polish. When this diamond was found it took 3 years alone to figure out how to cut it and when they did it has 55 faces!
Having huge purchases like with crypto will help further adoption and adaptation by both governments and markets across the globe. When the rich and famous start using something the government is more likely inclined to accept it as it means it has spread from beyond its niche group of users. This is a fantastic example of that and something I hope to continue to see moving forward!
