Candy Digital and Netflix Receive Mixed Feedback on Their Stranger Things NFTs

By Cje95 | Chronic Illness and Crypto | 15 Jun 2022

Over the last month or so Candy Digital has really begun to branch out from its core business of MLB NFTs. For the most part, their partnerships have been received with overwhelming fanfare however that seems to have hit a little bit of a sang with this most recent one.

Netflix chose Candy as the company to run its Stranger Things NFT collection. This collection it turns out was actually hinted at in the official trailer from Stranger Things but as someone who only watched the first couple of seasons, I never saw it. When reading through this backlash I cannot help but be a little confused by it for a variety of reasons I will cover below.

So what does this collection entail?

The collection has five different digital posters for a total of 11,111 NFTs that were all minted on the Palm blockchain. An individual can earn one of these NFTs by playing a mystery minigame solving riddles. Since it is a free game that is not required of people and just something fun offered to fans of the series you would think that it would have been widely accepted as something fun to do.

Instead, it has been met with pretty significant pushback which again really confuses me. You would think since this was free and that this is a sci-fi show people would not have such fits about a futuristic thing like NFTs being given away for free. The Twitter response has been absolutely brutal with people upset that "Netflix decided it'd be a good idea to run an NFT grift on its fans." I do not know if the people writing these things are paying attention or not but this is literally something that is free. You do not have to buy it just imagine it as a Stranger Things lunchbox you see in a store. You don't have to purchase it you can walk right past it and the same is true here.

I know fanbases can be weird about things but I think it's the whole sci-fi show doing a sci-fi thing that is confusing me the most. Being given free stuff seems like something people would go crazy for not something that would cause an outcry? Fandoms have also been an interesting thing to me but this is by far one of the strangest reasons for outcry I have seen in a while.
