I am not the first person to point out how civil discourse seems to have gone by the wayside in the last 10 years. Now during this election cycle there seems to be more rage, hatefulness, and bad behavior than I've yet seen in my lifetime. I have my theories about why this is happening but that's not the purpose of this note. I have been guilty, particularly in one instance I can think of, of forwarding and sharing something that was incorrect about a candidate whose political agenda I deeply oppose. It wasn't intentional and several people pointed out my error. I am grateful to the people who, in a civil manner, let me know I was incorrect as I truly do not want to spread lies. But in a third instance I was messaged and cussed out with a string of expletives used to describe me. Needless to say, I blocked that person from future communication. I have friends whose politics are very different from mine and I am always happy to read their links and consider the memes that so often summarize how one feels most efficiently. I'm not angry at you for having a different opinion and perspective than myself. I think we need to hear other viewpoints in order to grow and learn. I do however feel that some political choices will lead to loss of liberty but I don't believe that attacking you is the way to persuade you; and I guarantee it's not the way to persuade me. So, to my civil friends, please always feel free to share your opinions. A free exchange of ideas is important to a free nation! Soon this election cycle will pass and the dust will settle. Most likely, regardless of who wins the presidency, the world won't come to an end. We will still love, work, pay bills, go to school, raise children, etc. There will still be joy in the world! It will be so much more joyful if we have kept our friends by treating each other respectfully. When we sit together for a meal, work with each other, worship together, or cheer on our favorite team together, it is easier to see the humanity we share and how much we really have in common. I will continue to share what I think, and by all means, please share your ideas with me. I want our friendship to last beyond this and future elections.
Sincerely,
Ilene Witt
