Information and children

By Pluton | Century-of-science | 6 Sep 2019

There may be some inaccuracies in English.

Information technologies of the 21st century brought us not only a new intellectual environment, qualitative improvement of the process of computing, control and data processing, but also psycho-emotional problems of interaction with information flows.

Of particular concern are the attachment of children and adolescents to communication devices – smartphones and computers. Of course, the attachment is not caused by the devices themselves, but the ability of children to interact in a special way with the outside world. And this world is very important for the child, perhaps, as well as the world of your family, your Hobbies.

It is worth noting that the problem is not new: children's attachment to anything developed before, long before the advent of computers. Such dependencies include old backyard games: craps, rounders, cards, etc. Immense reading can also be attributed to not very healthy addiction.

Cartoon characters, games, network friends fill the emotional world of the child is not always a positive effect. Although studies show that computer games and networking have some positive impact on human thinking, nevertheless, for many parents whose children can not tear themselves away from cartoons or computer games, such Hobbies are a justifiable concern.

We can say that as soon as the child has received the necessary positive amount of information, he should switch to another field of activity. Radical measures of physical punishment, which will be worse than the subject of Hobbies, or throwing smartphones, we will not consider (a new study on the topic*), limited to recommendations and experience.

   1. If you have a small child, from one to three years, then in your hands the opportunity to support and direct natural curiosity in the right direction. It is not necessary to completely prohibit interaction with gadgets, because later acquaintance can cause a stronger dependence. A child at an early age becomes emotionally accustomed to surrounding objects, including a TV and a smartphone, and is more likely to treat digital devices as a means of obtaining information rather than emotional pleasure. It is not bad, for example, to follow and own character of network communication.

   2. For older children, from 3 to 5 years, interaction with TV and smartphones can bring significant benefits in the development of the world only with the correct regulation of this process. This is the age when parents can still easily control the time and content of the information received by the child. It is better if part of the time computer games parents spend with their child. So they can not only better influence the emotional state of the child, but also to trace it. Properly selected for this period of transmission and games help the child to receive a lot of useful information, to master the norms of social behavior, to receive lessons of correct speech, to acquire practical skills.

   3. For older children, school-age, more subtle methods of influence are required, especially if at a young age the emotional connection with the child has been missed. And although students are occupied by school and additional classes, some children fall into a significant dependence on computer games and network communication. Although the author of the article is a supporter of a radical ban on social networks for minors, the reality requires taking into account what exists. If a child has "bosom" friends and they communicate through social networks, a complete ban requires serious arguments. Parents, of course, have the right to fully control the correspondence and all network "friends". The child should be explained that this is a requirement of the law and if he objects, the parents will be in big trouble and, accordingly, the child himself. Usually, the child has scientific or technical interests: it is good to determine it in the appropriate circle or club, it will significantly take his emotional sphere and about the network "entertainment" he will remember less often.

Of course, all children are different, but everyone should talk about versatile development, the need to grow up a full and healthy person and, if possible, contribute to this. Do not hesitate to contact specialists if the behavior and Hobbies of children cause concern.
