Why “Touch” is the Best Trick You’ve Never Taught
Most dog owners think of sit, stay, or paw when it comes to training. But there’s a hidden gem of a trick that trainers love: teaching your dog to “touch” their nose to your hand.
At first glance, it seems simple. But here’s the magic: once your dog learns “touch,” you can use it as the foundation for countless other tricks — like closing doors, ringing a bell, or weaving through your legs. It’s also incredibly useful for redirecting your dog’s attention if they’re anxious or distracted.
How to Teach It in 3 Easy Steps
Step 1: Present Your Hand
Hold your open palm out just a few inches from your dog’s nose. Dogs are naturally curious — most will sniff your hand.
Step 2: Reward the Sniff
The moment their nose makes contact with your palm, mark the behavior with a cheerful “Yes!” or a click (if you use a clicker) and reward with a small treat.
Step 3: Add the Cue Word
After a few repetitions, say the word “Touch” right before you present your hand. Your dog will quickly connect the word with the action.
Repeat this in short, fun sessions. Within a day or two, your dog will be confidently bumping your hand with their nose on command!
Why It’s More Than Just a Trick
✔ Builds Confidence – Great for shy or rescue dogs who need simple wins.
✔ Redirects Focus – Perfect for distracting your dog from barking or lunging.
✔ Gateway to Advanced Tricks – You can expand it into high fives, spins, or even teaching your dog to close a cupboard door.
