You've probably heard about the '2022 everything crash' but the pre-owned market for vintage cars didn't get the memo. And it's worse than you think. Or better, depending on your point of view.

The insanity has reached new levels with this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Coupé, which just sold for $142 million. Yup. 142. Million. Dollars.

One of two in existence, people didn't even know it was for sale because Mercedes-Benz themselves cooardinated the auction, invite-only of course.

It's based on the Grand Prix-winning single-seater W196, powered by a three-litre straight-8, delivering just over 300 bhp.

According to Autocar, which tested the vehicle in the late 1950s, it did 0-60 in 6.9 seconds and was capable of reaching a top speed of 176 mph.

Not that everyone cares, of course. The rubber on this car will never ever hit the road. Pun intended.

They called it the Monna Lisa, the vehicle that "wouldn't be sold". Well, I guess only half of it was true.
