Scuderia Ferrari's awful performance: a 5-minute rant

By LeftFooted | Cars & tech | 13 Jun 2022

There's always something else, isn't it? It's the driver's fault. It's the other driver's fault. It's the other teams' drivers' fault. Bad strategy. Bad luck. The car's too fast now, which made it unreliable.

Ferrari have the largest budget in F1. They are the most popular, famous and successful team in the sport's history. And yet. Somebody once famously said that money in football is not everything because "I've never seen a wad of dollars score a goal" and it's the same with Formula 1.

Ferrari feel entitled to a win that they can't seem to grab on the field and it's no one's fault but theirs. They haven't won a Constructors' title since 2008 and a Drivers' title since 2007 and over the last 15 years, they've only had one, maybe two title challenges.

Part of the reason why they keep failing is Italians tend to fail upwards, throwing a deadly combination of arrogance and whataboutism in the mix, fuelled by the media, who are spectacularly bad at being objective when it comes to anything and everything Italian. And I'm allowed to say that because I was born in the country.

Maurizio Arrivabene is a classic case in point. He's a manager who spent pretty much his entire career in the cigarette business before being recruited as team principal at Ferrari. Yeah, I don't get it either. It didn't go too well at Ferrari so he's now working at Juventus, the football club, who are now struggling to make the top 4 after winning 9 consecutive titles. But maybe it's just a coincidence.

You're only as good as your last job. Ferrari have to get real and to stop acting like the world of Formula 1 owes them a title. But it's always somebody else's fault, isn't it?
