OpenAI is about to shut down Sora, ChatGPT's text-to-video app, just a few weeks after announcing a major partnership deal with Disney - reportedly worth $1 billion - and just a few days after announcing its intention to integrate Sora directly into OpenAI.
Parkour - the famous meme would go.
The timing might feel a bit wonky, but the writing has been on the wall for a very long time.
And it highlights two problems that no one seems to consider with AI.
One, AI needs huge amount of electricities, which also means it needs huge amounts of money.
All of these AI companies burn through cash like it's not their cash (which it isn't, often).
Second, no one has figured out a way to make AI profitable.
As reported by several outlets, including Forbes, Sora was costing OpenAI around $15 million a day. So that's $5.4 billion per year.
And that's just to run it.
It was free to use, and even including subscription plans (up to $200 per month), OpenAI was only making back a fraction of that cost.
Apparently, a 10-second Sora video cost $1.3 to make.
A 60-second video? That's the same as charging around 1,800 smartphones from 0 to 100 percent.
