Microsoft and OpenAI are apparently renegotiating their terms.
According to a report from the Financial Times, Microsoft is considering giving up a portion of its equity in OpenAI and, in turn, this will allow Microsoft to retain access to AI company's products beyond 2030, which is when their original agreement is set to expire.
Microsoft has invested a significant chunk of cash into OpenAI, starting from 2019.
In fact, the tech giant has invested so much that it has de-facto become OpenAI's largest stakeholder.
Also, side note, OpenAI announced it was abandoning its shift to a for-profit model in favour of a 'public benefit corporation' status, which is sort of halfway between for-profit and non-profit.
OpenAI has been going back and forth with this for years now.
The AI company started out as a non-profit in 2015, and it has gradually shifted towards a for-profit model.
Elon Musk, who founded (and funded) OpenAI, has often criticised Sam Altman for this, and he actually went as far as to sue him and OpenAI.
