End of era: Microsoft to shut down Skype

By LeftFooted | Cars & tech | 1 Mar 2025

Skype was created in 2003 as a telecommunications application designed specifically for video calls.

It was basically Zoom and Teams before Zoom and Teams.

It's been around forever, and it's been sold twice.

First in 2005 by eBay for $2.6 billion, and then again in 2011 by Microsoft for $8.5 billion.

Microsoft used some of its IP and some of its feature and launched Teams, which explains why Skype is dying, effectively.

No point keeping Skype alive when you already have Teams under the same umbrella.

Microsoft announced the shutdow in February, and all servers will go offline on May 5.
