UFC on ESPN: Thompson vs. Holland, Picks and Commentary

By Sanity Check | Kaizen | 29 Nov 2022

Pick #1  Kyle Daukaus (-215)

Daukaus record displaying 9 sumissions in 11 professional victories, indicates where his strengths are distributed.

Eryk Anders recently landed at Henry Cejudo's Fight Ready gym after bouncing from gym to gym for a few years. Anders recent emphasis on his clinch game and wrestling under fight ready was showcased in his last outing versus Jun Yong Park.

While a greater emphasis on wrestling and clinch work fostered by wrestling heavy fight ready MMA gym could give Eryk Anders greater confidence to let his hands go. Against a grappler with 9 submissions in 11 wins in Kyle Daukaus, that gameplan could work against Anders as it could give a skilled grappler many opportunities to work their craft.

Pick #2  Roman Dolidze (+145)

Roman Dolidze has competed professionally in MMA for approximately 6 years.

His opponent Jack Hermansson by contrast has competed professionally for near to 12 years and appears to show indications of losing motivation to train and compete. One considered a hot prospect to fight for the 185 lb UFC belt, Hermansson has suffered a skid of 3 defeats which could ensure his name will not appear in a discussion for title contention in the future. With this realization can come acknowledgement for the end of a career. Or a massive effort to stage a comeback. Hermansson has not displayed many indications of a comeback thus far.

Momentum appears to be on Dolidze's side.

Pick #3  Jonathan Pierce (-450)

Since losing to Joe Lauzon in 2019, Jonathan Pierce has been on fire. Finishing 3 of his last 4 opponents.

Darren Elkins by contrast has appeared past his prime at 38 years of age. A veteran of many brutal wars in the UFC, one might naturally expect Darren "The Damage" Elkins to show signs of slowing. Recipient of more than one fight of the night bonus, Elkins has staged seemingly impossible comebacks in fights where he was being dominated, more than once. Does Elkins have one more Rocky Balboa moment in him? Never say never.

That said, Elkins has been around for so many years, his style is known. The strengths and dangers he poses are known. All of these factors converge to make another come from behind win for Elkins less probable.

Pick #4  Tracy Cortez (-110)

Henry Cejudo recently proclaimed Tracy Cortez the future world champion of the women's 115 lb division in the UFC. This proclamation came after time spent training Cortez at Cejudo's Fight Ready MMA gym in arizona.

Amanda Ribas by contrast has appeared unfocused and unmotivated in her recent performances. A noticeable difference to earlier in her career when she was more focused and her game was on point.

Momentum and motivation would appear to be on the side of Cortez.
